Default Pros -N- Cons of Intake or filter??

I was thinkin of just getting the K&N air filter or getting the K&N cold air intake from modern performance. I just hear people talkin about how the cold air intake would hurt my performance but I wanted to see what your opinion were on it if you have either one of these. And also do you get better gas milage and performance with both? Thanks

Right now I'm running a K&N air filter and plan to get my CAI after I get Stage 1 on in a few weeks. That, combined with my Mopar/Borla exhaust will put me around 250 HP.
The K&N air filter gives you a slight increase in mileage and performance, while the CAI does a little more. It also sounds meaner especially with a BOV. It all depends on what you want, it's your car...

I have heard that the short ram intake doesn't do anything for your engine since it's drawing air right from the hot engine bay....

BTW, if you all these mods on your SRT-4, you're not going to be worrying about gas mileage, trust me!!!!![sm=smiley20.gif][sm=smiley36.gif]

i've had the k&n filter in my 03 stock air box, and i was very happy. gas mileage?.....i dunno, but yes you get a little more pep with it than the stock filter. it helped my top end speed from 148 (stock) to 151 (w/ filter). it also helped imho the low end launches too. and if your going sleeper mode, under the hood it looks very stock.... which is very nice. i'm opting for the cai from k&n to boost up my horses and torque (a dyno tested ~10 and 11 respectfully) in my new 04. it can look pretty (i'm not the bling kinda guy) and the sound that it makes that others have mentioned as the turbo begins to spool sounds like fun, but completely icing on a multi-tiered platform like the srt-4. the filter option is also very easy to do-it-yourself and cheap (~$45 vs. $200 cai). your call bro.

There is no way for a CAI to hurt it's performance. All it does is eliminate the big ugly black air box and tubes. It runs through the same place and pick up the air from between the inner and outer fenders, just like the factory set up. The only difference is the diameter of the piping and where the air filter itself is placed. It retains the vacuum connections as well, so it is not possible to hurt performance. It would be exactly like placing a pipe in the air box that connects one side to the other, where it pulls in the air, and placing the filter at the end instead of in the box. Besides, it has been dyno proven time and again. The K&N and the AEM both show significant horsepower and torque gains over the stock air box, even with a K&N replacement filter in the air box. You get the wonderful turbo sounds finally and an increase in performance, what more could one ask for.[sm=smiley20.gif][sm=smiley27.gif][sm=smiley2.gif]

FYI: I have read those same things before about it causing problems, but I think it is from improper installation and not the CAI itself.

Just remember to take your time on the install, read the directions completely a few times to know what to expect, and make sure everything fits nice and snug/tight. I've heard of CAIs occasionaly falling/popping off under spirited driving. I do a weekly check of all the nuts/bolts and any type of fastener on any mod I do to the car or have done to the car....[&:]

I didn't read all of what everyone else has said about gas mileage, but let me put in my "2 cents"...

I put an AEM on mine and love it, I never had checked my mileage before so I don't know how mush better/worse it really is. but, common snese tells you that more air means more fuel... This new filter will let in alot more air than your stock filter, therefore the computer senses that there is too much air going into the engine and not enough fuel, so it sends more fuel into it. There is no damper or anything for the computer to send the engin less or more air, so a more flowing filter means more air, which means the engine MUST have more fuel. But, I have not noticed haveing to fill up my tank any more than I used to have to, but like I said, common sense will tell you more air, more fuel...

It only works that way if your foot is always in it. Since the boost is controlled by the PCM, as well as the fuel and spark advance, it will not use more gas. It will actually improve fuel mileage. The better the air flows in and out the more efficient it is and the more power it will produce. The more power there is, the less the engine has to work. With a CAI you are adding power without loosing fuel mileage, but actually gaining a little fuel mileage. When you change the PCM to make better use of these mods, then your fuel mileage will drop.

My '99 R/T had MP CAI, MP chrome header, MP cat-back exhaust, MP PCM, MSD Super Conductor plug wires, MSD ignition coil and still got 30-35 MPG. The mods that made better air flow in and out and better spark off set the MP PCM's spark advance and more fuel usage. Any time you increase an engines efficency (air flow in and out and spark energy) the better fuel mileage you will get.[sm=smiley2.gif]

I was thinking of getting a CAI, although I have heard people having problems with hydro locking because of heavy rain. Not sure if it is a myth, but I wouldn't want to to chance it untill I find out the truth. I am sure the vaccum on a turbo powered vehicle is a lot stronger than n/a's(I guess thats the right term). So it sucks up the air like a straw. I thought what little water that would splash up and get sucked in would be burnt off by the time it hits the turbo, but.. I'm not very car savy, so I could be talking out of my ***. Any comments on the hydro lock?
