Newbie to the SRT-4 need some help
Hey guys. I am 15 years old and, o about a few months ago my parents bought me a 2004 Dodge SRT-4 in Electric blue (I also have my dads ride listed in my sig) http://www.cardomain.com/member_page...page_id=295840
all I have done to it so far is add Piaa Extreme whites, and soon will have some new taillights, and a new 3rd brake light, but on to the ?'s
I was wondering do these Stage 1/2/3 upgrades void your warranty on the car, not so much the parts you install but the main powertrain/ engine waranty, because my dad would never let me do something to my car that would void the warranty. I also was wondering what this blowoff valve I was reading about does for the car, I understand what kinda sound it makes but does it do anything performance wise, I love that pshhh sound (I've heard it on other cars and would love it on mine) how much do they cost, and do they void anything on your warranty. Do you think a non SRT dealer could install one, because my local dealership does not have the lisence to sell SRT's we hadto work through them and get one transfered in form another dealer, and go figure it was cheaper to buy through a non SRT dealer than to go to the SRT dealer and buy one straight from them. Any help would be appreciated.

Mopar Performance Parts carry no warranty and are sold "as is". "Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep warranties are voided if the vehicle or parts are used for competition or if they fail as a result of modification." (Quoted from the paperwork that came with my Stage 1 upgrade.....)
I would hope you are mature enough and have some kind of FWD, high power driving experience under your belt to tackle a SRT-4, stock, Stage 1, or Stage 2.
Any good mechanic familiar with tubo motors can put on the BOV....if he WANTS to or not is a different story. I had to "sweeten" the install at my dealership by buying a box of donuts for the service department....[sm=smiley23.gif]
Just kidding,,,,,

Yea I asked Chrysler about that and that is what they told me. What does that exactly mean tho, it voids the warranty if your race it or they just will not replace the parts you put in or they wont replace anything that goes wrong with the car. What does the blow off valve even do. I love the sound but is there a purpose other than that. And yes I'm very mature, I woud say getting a 4.0 in school mature and resposible, and I really baby my cars, trust me on that. So will this void my main powertrain warranty or my extended warranty or will or does that mean they just won't replace the part you add. Sorry I just don't understand there wording on the issue. Thanks
First of all, congratulations on the GPA! As far as the warranty goes, in plain English as was explained to me on this forum as well, the "Performance Parts" have no warranty. Mopar Replacement Parts do have a warranty. Notice the difference in wording. Stage 1, 2 and BOV's are "Performance Parts".
The BOV is mostly a "sound device" which vents excess pressure from the turbo to the atmosphere instead of sending it back into the engine. It reduces the operating temp. a little by doing that (which is GOOD on a turbo) and lets your turbo spool up more freely.
It also startles other drivers and people walking along the road....but I'm over 50, I don't do that sort of stuff.......[sm=smiley36.gif][sm=smiley36.gif]
In order to void your warranty, the dealer must prove the mod(s) you made caused the failure of the specific part. I'm in the same situation as you and I got Stage 1, but Stage 2 at this point is still up in the air....too many negative feedbacks as of now.....[sm=smiley16.gif]

Thanks, so I'm guessing with a blow off valve they could never prove it caused the engine to blow up if it did lol. Hope that don't happen. How much is this gonna run me and how much for labor or atleast a guestament if you don't mind. Thanks for the help again.
The BOV is really just a "spacer" with holes in it to vent the gases out to the air instead of sending them back in to the engine....it might help your turbo to last a little longer actually....but I can't say for sure. All I know is that my SRT seems to run "happier" with it on than it did without it. The Mopar/Borla exhaust probably helps too, as well as the Stage 1.....
Figure on $65 for the BOV, $110 for the install....$325 for the Stage 1 (be sure to get the 2004 version w/o the fuel injectors) and that's a pretty simple install. You really need to add an Oil Catch Can as well, see this Forum for the postings on it or e-mail me...[sm=smiley16.gif]

For now I figure I will just add the BOV, because I don't have the money for the rest, I'll have to talk my dad into letting me add the BOV for now
I'll pay for it but it will still take some convincing. Thanks for the info. I think I will have to add this site to my list of dodge sites to visit daily. I am also a active member of dodgetalk.com Thanks again man, your help is much appreciated.

Welcome to the wonderful world of the SRT-4.[sm=smiley20.gif] As dusty has already said, the Mopar Performance parts have NO warranty whatsoever. In the event of a problem, breakdown or malfunction the dealership has to prove that the Mopar Performance (or any other aftermarket, non-factory parts) directly caused the failure/breakdown. A perfect example of this would be a CAI (Cold Air Intake). Lets say you put one on your SRT-4. Your driving around and experience engine trouble, so you take it in to the dealer. It has a broken cam or bad bearings or something like this. They have to repair it under the factory warrant, because they are NOT aftermarket or added performance parts and because the CAI could not and did not cause this problem. However, if you were driving in the rain and go into a puddle that is deeper than what you thought and the air filter gets submerged in the water and sucks it up into the engine causing it to hydro-lock and it bends or breaks a connecting rod, your screwed. Because you had the CAI and it places the air filter and intake tube much lower than stock, they can prove that this modification/part was a direct cause of the failure. If it were stock this would not have happened and they can easily prove it. In this case NONE of the repairs, parts or labor is covered under the factory warranty, since the factory parts were damaged as a result of this modification/part.
The Mopar Performance BOV is $69.99 at the dealer, you will also want to get and use some Permatex Hylomar Gasket Dressing & Flange Sealant, you can get it at Auto Zone for $3.99. Labor costs to have it put on may vary, make sure that they read the instructions well because there have been far to many cases of certified mechanics putting them on wrong. After it is done, rev it up and when you let off the gas it should be a very noticable PSSSHHT sound. If you can barely hear it or it sounds very muted, they have put it on or together wrong. Also, when driving it jump into it once to make sure you are getting full boost still (12-15 psi), if it isn't it may be leaking boost (this is why I recommend the Permatex Hylomar, to help eliminate any possibility of this).
The BOV also helps reduce the intake temperatures, which helps produce more power as well as extending the life of the engine and turbo.
You will want to get an OCC (Oil Catch Can). This helps to keep oil out of the intake manifold and will extend the life of the engine, emissions parts and spark plugs. It catches the oil that blows past the PCV valve while under boost. You can pick one up for only $12.99 at Auto Zone (Campbell Hausfeld MP5138 mini air filter), as well as the fittings and the hose you will also need, this will bring it up to between $20-$25 total. Here is a great link detailing how to install it: http://www.dodge-srt4.com/howto/catchcan.html It only took me around 5-10 minutes to install mine and around 15 minutes to install one on the Shelby Z I use to have (it only took longer due to my idiot ex-stepbrother not buying enough hose, so I had to improvise).
Another thing you will want to do is replace the factory plug wires, as they are prone to damage and failure from turbo heat. You can get a set of MSD Super Conductor plug wires, in red or black, for $39.99 at any good high performance shop.

I forgot to ask, will this BOV be bad for the car in the winter when it is below zero because it is letting the hot air ou, if so I wont be able to get it. Also how do stock tires handle in snow/ice. Do I need diff rims and tires for winter if so which ones. Thanks
The SRT-4 engine runs REALLY HOT and the BOV doesn't loose that much heat. Shouldn't make a difference in the winter. I saw some ricers with BOVs up in Montana, they ran just fine (but not as fast as a SRT-4). [sm=smiley36.gif]
The stock tires are "three season" tires and you'll need something different to drive in ice and snow....your Dodge dealer or any good tire company should be able to steer you straight...[&:] Pardon the pun. [sm=smiley36.gif]
