Default A little help please...

Howdy, Im a newb to the forum thing but im quite frustrated with my car so i figured id try to figure this all out. i just bought the new srt4...damn, thats all i can say, but i want to say it louder so im looking for advice on some initial mods to get a bit more power. i think ive got it pretty narrowed down but have some questions; as for bov, is it best to start with the mopar? is it a worthwhile investment (will it be fun) to get the k&n typhoon cca? and last but not least, when it comes to the sts, should i go with mopar again? thanks for any help

congrats on the pick up, YES X 10000 the mopar bov is worth it. its really the only smart option for this car because all the other bov's require a charge pipe or cost a lot more. and again go with the mopar sts. its an easy install for both the sts and bov. and the typhoon cai is what im goin with in a bit so good call on that one, as for hp upgrades set up your breathing and spark system then get S2....

Breath in, Breath out. K&N air filter or CAI system plus Mopar/Borla exhaust system will get you the most bang for the bucks. The sts can be a bit stiff, but the Mopar BOV is an investment in happiness. Get some MSD plug wires to replace your stock ones that will begin to melt soon...

Want it loud? The Mopar/Borla exhaust is the way to go. Team it up with a Stage 1 PCM for even more noise!!!!!!!!!

Here goes:

Q: as for bov, is it best to start with the Mopar?

A: Yes. It is good and loud, far cheaper that any and all other BOV's and it's also the easiest to install. All other BOV's, except the Forge, require you to install a block-off plate where the Mopar BOV goes and they require you to purchase a new pressure pipe in which to mount the BOV. And if you have to go through the trouble of putting in a block off plate, you might as well just get the Mopar BOV that way you'll be done in just that one step. With the difference in price alone, Mopar BOV $70 + Permatex $4 = $74.00 where an aftermarket BOV $130 + block-off plate $19 + pressure pipe $140 = $289.00 and this is with the cheapest items I found. $289 - $74 = $215.00 difference, this would pay for your CAI and a full tank of gas.[sm=smiley2.gif]

Q: is it a worthwhile investment (will it be fun) to get the K & N Typhoon CAI?

A: Yes. Fun isn't even close to the love you will have for it after you get it put on.[sm=smiley4.gif][sm=smiley4.gif] You haven't even begun to hear your turbo until you get a CAI put on it. The K & N Typhoon can be purchased from Modern Performance for only $199.99 with free shipping. You can set it up for true cold air or short ram and you can switch between the two anytime you want, I keep mine in the cold air set up. You get a performance gain and a whole lot of new found turbo sound, at WOT it screams with one helluva loud whistle.[sm=smiley15.gif][sm=smiley20.gif][sm=smiley4.gif][sm=smiley2.gif]

Q:and last but not least, when it comes to the sts, should i go with mopar again?

A: Yes. It properly shortens the shift throws and it is priced as well if not better than the others. I love my Mopar STS, it takes out alot of the throw and it feels great, but it is a little stiffer. It also retains the stock shifter height and use of the factory shift ****. This is the best STS.[sm=smiley20.gif]

I also recommend a good aftermarket exhaust as well. If you want maximum sound then you want a 3" SS turbo back exhaust, but if money is a factor stick with the Mopar/Borla cat-back exhaust. The Mopar/Borla isn't a whole lot louder than stock at idle, but it is when you get on it. Naturally the 3" exhausts will be far louder, especially if it is one without the cat.

On a no noise note, I highly suggest that you get one of the $20 oil catch cans (OCC). Due to poor plug wire design, replace the stock plug wires with a set of MSD Super Conductor plug wires. They not only resist the high heat from the turbo, but they also provide hundreds of times more spark energy to the plugs which will improve power, emissions and reduce if not eliminate the chance of spark blow out.[sm=smiley20.gif][sm=smiley2.gif]

if you always stick with mopar, you can never go wrong... It can cost more than some aftermarket parts, but usually the quality is much better. the CAI is a great mod, but i did not notice much power gain, but now you can hear the car when you give it gas and with the mopar BOV (which is very worth the money) you hear the car when you let off. the more noise the better, right?

if you're looking for a cai, i would suggest taking a look at the iceman that will be released soon. there are protoype pics on srtforums. it's a much better design than any of the other cai's on the market, and will probably cost about the same. if i had the choice, i would have waited for that one.

the mopar bov...this is a matter of preference really. i have it, and i've grown to hate it. i too thought that it was the best since it was bolt on, no other pipes, etc. now i can't stand the thing and i'm getting rid of it. if money isn't the problem, i would definitely say go with a greddy or hks. if you're not looking for the top of the line or to spend extra money, i would say fine. the forge motorsports bov is pretty much the same thing as the mopar, but it isn't as prone to leaking as the mopar. if you don't want to upgrade pipes and such but still want a bov, take a look at it.

for the sts, definitely go mopar. the perrin is about twice the price and the same thing. and while you're at it, get a set of booger bushings and install those at the same time. they're about $20 and you can get them at modern. the difference is quite noticeable.

i too would suggest a exhaust. the borla is great, and there are some other systems out there that are great as well, just more expensive. most of the other exhausts are 3", the borla is 2 1/2". so that's really up to you as to how loud you want to go. bdj make a very nice 3" system that uses a muffler, so it isn't as loud as some of the others. i love the exhaust depot one, but it's kinda expensive and very loud. look around and check the sound clips to see what you prefer.

well, its done, where to start...who the hell said it only took 45 minutes? it took me the better part of 3 hours, then again, maybe im just a mechanical motard. anyways, heres my advice to anyone who happens to be thinking of installing a new bov:
1: do not wear shorts, the mosquitos love bare legs, if youve ever been to texas, you know that this can mean sure death due to loss of blood.
2: start well before sundown, working in insuficeint light is a real pain
3: smoke often, it helps calm down the anger you harbor towords bolt number 3
4: keep the faith, it is possible to put it back together, even if your socket is now too long to fit in the itty-bitty space you have after putting in the new bov
and what do i get for my efforts? slightly burned hands (i didnt let my engine cool long enough), plenty of itchy bumps, a sore throat from too much smoke, a few cuts and bruises (no biggie), and how the hell do i get this gasket sealant off my arms?!?
but, in the end, it was worth it, great sound, can maintain boost longer before it drops off, and i like scaring people i drive by with the hiss. again, thanks for the tips, ill be ordering my sts tomorrow, hoping the install is a bit eaiser
