Construction Worker Needs Help To Get His 96 Dodge Ram back to Work!
So , the other day after work, I decided to replace a flasher relay in fuse box, and took the dash face off, to repair volume switch on my stereo, Now my truck will not start.
Battery seems to be charged, and lights on dash, come on when i go to start, but will not begin to turnover. The only thing that I can think of, was when I took dash face off, I had to pull auto shifter down, to slide it out from behind steering wheel, when i did that, truck went into neutral with the key on, and rolled forward a few feet before I applied the brake....
Read about, neutral safety switches, starter relays, etc... just not sure... Has never had any problems starting, charging etc....
Any suggestions on where to go from here, would be greatly appreciated. Need to get back to work on monday.
Thanks,

The face plate shouldn't have cause any problem starting. i would charge the battery and check the wire from the battery to the starter. And check the ignition wire at the starter too. Also be sure the battery cables are clean and making good contact. Which relay did you replace or changed? I know there was a recall for the ignition switch harness for the Ram trucks in 1996. Do you know if the recall was ever done?

The only thing i replaced was a flasher/blinker relay, and i disconnected wires that came through dash. power outlet, and cir. lighter. is there a way to by pass ignition and turn starter over? would that help to reset things it i could start it then drive it around?
Try this, If it doesn't work then i'll move your post to the 2nd Gen Ram section. Find the starter relay in the PDC and fuse cavity D 20a fuse. With a 12 volt test light, check the fuse. If that is good, then with key on. Remove the starter relay and check cavity 86, that is the ignition feed to the starter. Then use a jumper wire and jump from 86 to cavity 87. Does the starter crank the engine?
Dude, So guess it must be a connection issue around steering column, I was looking around under Column, with my head kind of up against wires, went to turn key on to see if i could hear anything clicking, and it fired up. Not sure why, How, etc... I will keep her running, and pray it starts up again after i put dash and covers back in place. Does it sound like a connection prob. in wires on column, or to ignition to you? Thanks again for your help.
