IM Mark Gilmore I am 19 and running my own business . I work most days sub contracting under a tree guy for now 7 days a week. My first dream truck I bought myself was a 2006 gmc 2500hd with the LBZ Duramax. (My opinion the best stock truck for my needs) I have pushed it with a gooseneck hitch and snow plow and in less than a year already have over 20k miles on it. In north Jersey after the hurricane I had a 20 foot flat deck 12 ton trailer fully loaded by hand with oak rounds with 3.5" sides. I estimated the gvw to be over 35/k and it pulled it 45 min trip and didn't even sweat. I tow a 36ft enclosed racing trailer all over the east coast down to NC.

The reason I come to this forum is to find out information on my new work truck I just purchased but have not yet started working. Its a 1998 Dodge 3500 with a 6bt. 5 speed standard trans. Duel rear tires, 4x4, 9ft Curtis plow, flat bed with upper and lower tool boxes, gooseneck hitch hidden under bed.

The guy I bought it from just put a brand new stock turbo in it because the old one had a rusted Wastegate? Im not shure but that seemed to be the only problem with it when I looked at it and took the old one home.

I want to know If I can get this old cummins to be as reliable and strong to pull with my duramax/Allison.

what milage would I be looking at when I run the truck empty/ towing?

I am sorry if I am starting to ask questions when I am just supposed to be introduce myself.

I am currently in the process of starting a landscaping business. I found a dodge for my sister when she told me she wanted a truck to. Its a beater and has some issues. 5.9 gas v8 1998 2500 with a myers 8 ft snow plow sitting on 265/75/16 tires 80% tread and only cost $500.

I am looking forward to learning a lot and I spend a lot of time reading other threads about getting hp out of a stock 6bt and the different options to get power and at different points in the RPM range.

Check out the 2nd gen Ram forums for LOTS of good information on both trucks.

Is your one ton the 12 valve? or 24 valve?

'98 would have the 24 valve, correct?

Early 98's had the 12, later 98's had the 24.

Oh, ok. Thanks for the clarification. I could've sworn they swapped to the 24 valve at the end of '97 or beginning of '98.
