Default Hello everyone

Hello, I’m Garrett and I’m new to the forum. I recently got a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 Laramie quad cab 4x4 with the 318. I traded for it and boy has it been trouble 😂
in the time since I’ve had it I’ve replaced the governor pressure solenoid, governor pressure sensor, torque converter clutch solenoid, 3-4 accumulator spring, fluid, and filter. Then reverse went out so I had to open it again and found the rear servo was stuck holding constant pressure on the rear band so I fixed that. Then my plenum gasket went out so I started to replace it and broke 2 bolts on the front where they sit beside the water jackets. So now I’m considering doing a 360 swap. I’m not a mechanic btw I’m just broke and can’t afford a mechanic

The one that's broke off almost flush is gonna be fun.....

The other one, should be easy.... Try this on both of 'em.... Clean around them REALLY well, then SOAK them with something like PB Blaster. (wd-40 won't cut it.) let that soak in for a bit, then grab the bolt with a pair of vice grips, and wiggle it back and forth. It *should* break loose, and then you can just thread it out. Not sure there is gonna be enough to grab on the drivers side though.... Give it a shot, see what happens.

You might just as well fix what you have, as the 5.9 had the same plenum issue as yours. (they ALL did....) It *can* be a nice truck. Just stick with it.

Welcome to DF!

I got all but one out of my '96 5.9. I just drilled the front drivers side bolt out and ran a helicoil into it. I went ahead and redid everything on the top and front of the engine. The oil sending unit had been leaking for years. About a quart every 600-700 miles until the plenum failed. Then a quart every 50-60 miles. I also replaced the cap, rotor, plugs and plug wires as well as the injector. I also found my harmonic balancer was coming apart for I put out for a new one. I also pulled the water pump and put a new timing chain in since it had a lot of slop. The water pump seemed good but I put a new one on because, why not? It was apart and just a few bucks to save future labor. All new hoses and that truck purrs going down the road. I even redid the valve cover gaskets while I was at it.

One thing I had that you don't look like you dealt with was an old battered beer can laying in the valley under the intake. There were several oily cigarette butts as well as a flattened can of Schlitz beer in there. My tika-tika-tika from the engine is gone.
