Default Chevy Blazer: Deadliest Vehicle on the Road?

DETROIT — The two-door Chevrolet Blazer SUV has the highest driver death rate of any vehicle on U.S. roads, according to a study released Tuesday by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

The study, which looked at passenger vehicles from the 1999-2002 model years, found the midsize Blazer had an average of 308 driver deaths per million registered vehicle years. The GM-built SUV also had the highest rate of driver deaths in rollover accidents at 251 per million.

After the Blazer, vehicles with the highest driver death rates included the Mitsubishi Mirage, Pontiac Firebird, Kia Rio and Kia Sportage.

Vehicles with the lowest rates of driver deaths were led by the Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan at 10 per million, IIHS said. That was followed by the Toyota 4Runner, the Volkswagen Passat and the Lexus RX 300.

What this means to you: Bad news if you own a Blazer, good news if you own a Mercedes E-Class.
