Newman gets last-lap push from teammate to win 500
By Sporting News Wire Service
February 17, 2008

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The Roger Penske Dodges ganged up on Tony Stewart during a three-lap run to the finish Sunday, propelling Ryan Newman to victory in the 50th Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway.

The victory was team owner Roger Penske's first at a restrictor-plate racetrack, and with Kurt Busch running second behind his teammate, it was the first time Penske cars have finished 1-2 in a Cup race.

Newman broke a 71-race winless drought with his 13th NASCAR Cup series victory. His previous win came in September 2005 at New Hampshire.

Stewart salvaged a third-place finish, with Kyle Busch finishing fourth despite leading 86 laps in the race's dominant car. Reed Sorenson ran fifth and Elliott Sadler sixth, followed by Kasey Kahne and Robby Gordon -- as Dodge claimed six of the top eight positions.

On Lap 195, Casey Mears, who was running fourth at the time, moved up the track across the nose of Stewart's No. 20 Toyota and slammed into the Turn 1 wall to bring out the seventh caution of the race and the fourth in the final 24 laps.

Jeff Burton had the lead on the final restart but was quickly shuffled back and finished 13th.

Busch was dominating the race in his No. 18 Toyota, having led 81 laps, when NASCAR threw the second debris caution of the afternoon on Lap 151. Busch restarted second behind Greg Biffle on Lap 156 but quickly regained the lead, pulling Stewart with him.

The first wreck of the day, when David Ragan lost control and pinched Roush Fenway teammate Matt Kenseth against the wall at the Turn 4 exit, brought out the third caution on Lap 161, and subsequent pit stops under yellow scrambled the field.

Busch was 11th when he restarted on Lap 166 and moved doggedly toward the front while Stewart, his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, traded the lead with Dale Earnhardt Jr., who finished ninth. When defending Cup champion

Jimmie Johnson got caught in the middle and went spinning after a tap from Sam Hornish Jr. off Turn 2 on Lap 176, all but five of the leaders came to the pits again.

Busch, however, slid across the front line of his pit stall on the stop and restarted ninth on Lap 181. Clint Bowyer quickly took the lead only to be turned into the infield grass by Juan Montoya on Lap 184.

An extra million for Newman and the team: Teammates #12-Ryan Newman and #2-Kurt Busch gave Dodge its first ever 1-2 sweep in NASCAR’s premier event, the Daytona 500, winning the 50th running of the “Great American Race” Sunday at Daytona International Speedway. The Dodge Charger domination didn’t stop there. Six of the first eight positions were filled by Dodge drivers. Reed Sorenson finished fourth, Elliott Sadler fifth, Kasey Kahne sixth and Robby Gordon seventh. Chrysler Chairman and CEO Robert Nardelli met with Dodge team owners earlier Sunday and announced there would be a $1 million bonus for a Dodge victory. During a meeting with several members of the motorsports press later in the day, he predicted a Dodge victory. It was Newman’s first Daytona 500 victory and snapped an 81-race winless streak. He led four times for eight laps in the #12 Alltel Dodge Charger, but the most important was the final circuit. The win was also the first Daytona 500 victory for car owner Roger Penske, the most successful owner in open wheel history with 14 Indianapolis 500 victories. It was the first Daytona 500 win by a Dodge driver since Ward Burton visited victory lane in 2002. Newman collected $1,506,045 for the win plus the $1 million bonus from Dodge. Newman’s Dodge Charger will be inducted into the Daytona 500 Experience Monday where it will remain on display for one year. Following the induction ceremonies, Newman departs for New York for a media tour and then on to Las Angeles on Tuesday afternoon for more appearances.(Dodge Motorsports PR)(2-18-2008)

I was watching the race with a bunch of my friends, and my one buddy was giving me crap all day
about how bad Newman sucked . When it came down the last lap I was freaking out.
My buddy will never live this day down.
Congrats to Dodge , Penske , and of course Ryan.

Now I gotta order me a new Daytona 500 champ hat!
