I went to the track for the first time. My 8th mile was 9.564. Everthing pretty much stock, including tires. Is that any good?

if you can provide some more info, i might be able to let you know where you can improve to get that time down a bit...but i dont believe that those times are bad. how hard were you launching? were you preloading, or just hammering the throttle when the light turned green?

id like to know what your trap speed was, and what your 60 foot time was...if you could just post the timeslip numbers, i might be able to give you some advice...

the first thing, i would not recommend just mashing the gas from idle. i would recommend preloading, so when you stage, hold the brake with your left, and ease into the throttle with your right foot. if you know your "stall rpm", you want to have it right around there. for instance, with amanda's ram, she preloads to around 1500, and when the light turns green, she floors it and releases the brake, but with stock tires, that will generally cause wheelspin, so you want to play with the launch rpms a bit...but i would strongly suggest preloading.

Trap speed?

R/T .308
60 2.240
330 6.226
1/8 9.564

mph 75.13

Thanks for the advice about the pre loading. I really am brand new to this, everything helps.

the better your suspension and tires (or the better your traction as a whole) the harder you can launch it.

thats good info...you have some room to make up on the line. i found a slip of amandas ram..

rt-.087 (this has no bearing on your ET, you could sit there for a week, and turn the same ET)
60 foot-2.135
8th-9.495
mph-73.000

i have another slip where she pulled a 2.08 short time, but she was running drag radials.

your trap speed being faster and your ET being slower shows that youre making good power (relative to the weight, compared to her ram), as you were faster on the top end, but the slower ET shows that youre not getting out as well.

where was your tire pressure? some people will tell you to drop it way down, which in theory helps, but with a basic street tire they are not made to run on low pressure, so it can actually hurt you. for a straight street tire, i generally recommend around 25psi.

an equation that many track racers use is 1 tenth from your short time cuts 1.5 tenths on the quarter mile ET, but that amount would be slightly less in the 8th, but if you can get off the line harder, i would bet that youre going to drop that ET down quite a bit..

i think that you will find that with some practice, and some varying launch techniques, youll get more out of it...it has more to give, youll just need to find it.

the easiest way to find that would be to buy good tires, but not everyone wants to do that.

i would GUESS that if you could get your short times into the 2.0X range, youll be down into the 9.2-9.3 8th mile ET range.
