Here's better question: With the 426 available off the shelf, why aren't more people buying them to put in the older Chryslers?I haven't checked since 2005, but the 426 long block was available through Mopar and several companies sold all the accessories. I am seriously thinking of dropping one in my 98 Ram. We don't have emissions here, so I know it would still be streetable.

i hope that it makes huge power for that...
the 340 in the mirada cost me 200 bucks to buy, a few hundred in machine costs...and over all it cost less than a grand to build. it made enough power to put a 3691lb car into the low 12.30s...which is around 500bhp, and around 370 whp.
the mopar 528 hemi crate makes 610 advertised hp, and costs around 18,000 dollars. i dont call that a bargain. the 426cid, 465hp hemi is 15,000-16,000 dollars...and those prices dont seem to include the carb or the headers...the BARE 426 hemi block, is 3,000. the heads from that 426 motor are 1100 bucks, bare. hell, the valve covers are an extra 600 bucks. unfortunately, most people who buy the hemi crates, or the crate motors in general, are only worried about their cars not leaking oil on the garage floor, and that it will idle nice in traffic on the way to a car cruise..for what those engines cost, you can build a NASTY engine..

His best times are in the low 10's. But it was built to street/track specs, so he won't burn up the engine sitting in traffic. I'm guessing that the weight of a factory 70 Charger RT, like his, is probably well over 4500 #. The guy that built his Charger was on the last Mopar (70's) Daytona winning team with Petty. My Brother claims that makes the car more valuable. I tell him getting the nasty Plum Crazy and primer body repainted would've done more for value.

im looking around online, and it seems that the curb weight of a 1970 charger rt ranged from 3800-4000lbs. cars were (amazingly) lighter then than they are now...my demon is around 2900lbs.
maybe he didnt paint it because paint is heavy? ive met guys who dont have their cars painted because it adds weight..
