Busch: Hershey's Kisses 300 Delay!!!
The two Dodges of Johnny Benson and Kasey Kahne were involved in a large accident during the Hershey's Kisses 300!
The NASCAR Busch Series Hershey's Kisses 300 has been red-flagged due to rain at Daytona.
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- It took just 11 laps for the Big One to eliminate several cars from contention in Saturday's Hershey's Kisses 300 at Daytona International Speedway.
The eight-car pileup was triggered when Mike Bliss got a great run exiting Turn 2 and attempted to carry that surge of momentum between Mike Wallace, riding the low line, and Jason Leffler on the high side.
As he shoved the nose of Bliss' Chevrolet between the cars of his competitors, the rear end came around, spinning him out in the middle of the track -- not to mention the middle of a 25-car pack.
"I kind of moved up the track, got on high side and the rear tires unloaded real quick," said a dejected Bliss as his Joe Gibbs Racing team worked feverishly on his demolished ride.
"People need to learn to work on their cars," said Joe Nemechek, who was caught up in the melee. "Guys are sliding sideways. (Bliss) just got loose in front of me, took out half the field. There was nowhere to go. It's not good.
"People gotta learn. I already went and told Mike Bliss to fix his car. He said it was driving good before it spun out. It's the beginning of the race. People aren't using their heads. It's uncalled for."
Joining Nemechek and Bliss in the accident were Leffler, Paul Menard, Johnny Benson, Kasey Kahne, Wally Dallenbach and C.W. Smith.
Matt Kenseth suffered minimal front-end damage as well.
"Where I was it looked like the 20 (Bliss) got loose, I don't know, I tried going low and there were a lot of cars around there," said Kahne, who plans to run both the Busch and Nextel Cup Series' full time in 2004. "It's way too early to be in the pits, I know that."
The competition was dicey during the 11-lap run, which Kahne says is enjoyable but inevitably hazardous.
"It's actually pretty fun," he said. "The problem is when somebody does get loose or wrecks, your day's over soon. This is no way to end the Daytona 300."
Dallenbach took a vicious head-on collision with the backstretch inside retaining wall.
"That was hardest hit I've ever had," said Dallenbach, a NBC racing analyst who also races part-time in the Busch Series. "I hit that wall a ton."
