Mayfield Wins At M.I.S.!!!!!!
BROOKLYN, Mich. -- Jeremy Mayfield came out on top of a chaotic race Sunday, running the last 52 laps of the GFS Marketplace 400 on a single tank of fuel to win his first Nextel Cup race this season.
Mayfield, whose most recent victory came last September in Richmond, was never close to the lead earlier in the race. But one by one, the leaders were forced to pit for fuel -- and Mayfield inherited the top spot with six laps to go in the 200-lap event at Michigan International Speedway.
"Man, we had a 20th-place car and we robbed the bank," said Mayfield's gleeful crew chief, Slugger Labbe.
Nearly every team in the 43-car field had problems with cut tires or engines that overheated when windblown garbage collected on grills, cutting off air to radiators. Mayfield's Evernham Motorsports Dodge was no exception.
"Our motor was running 270 [degrees] [Sunday]," Labbe said. "It was cooked, but we made it."
"They took a big chance running all the way [to the end] under green, and it's pretty cool winning a race like that," said Mayfield, who earned his fifth career win and solidified his hold on a top-10 spot in the points and a position in the upcoming Chase for the Nextel Cup.
Scott Riggs also stretched his gas to the end and finished a career-high second, followed by Matt Kenseth and Carl Edwards, who had been battling for the lead prior to the late pit stops.
Series points leader Tony Stewart -- who came into the race with five victories in seven starts -- never led Sunday but finished fifth for his eighth consecutive top-seven. Stewart and Jimmie Johnson, who placed 10th, became the first drivers to secure berths in the Chase.
Reigning Cup champion Kurt Busch, who dominated during the middle part of the race, wound up seventh, while pole-sitter Joe Nemechek, who fell far back into the pack after suffering a flat tire, came back to finish eighth.

Thats awsome. I was real happy for him. He came out of nowhere to win that race. I was at the Richmond race last September when he raced his way into the Chase. I was happy to see him with the race but it kinda pissed me off cuz JR. finished 2nd that day. Oh well. That was last year. Congrats Jeremy!
I thought I would provide the results, a cool new thing I found and a collection of pictures.
BTW That was an awesome race. Newman finish in an OK spot, to keep him good in the Chase. And Dodge had a damn good day, besides that damn top 10.

RacingOne Rewind: Michigan
Inside Line
Jeremy Mayfield went the final 52 laps without stopping for fuel to score the victory in Sunday's GFS Marketplace 400 at Michigan International Speedway, his first win since September of 2004.
Keys to Victory Lane
Mayfield's crew chief "Slugger" Labbe opted not to pit for fuel with the rest of the leaders and stretched their strategy to cover the final 52 laps of the race.
Zero to Hero
His winning streak finally came to an end, but after qualifying poorly and starting 36th, Tony Stewart rallied back to post an impressive fifth-place finish.
Race to the Chase
Jamie McMurray holds the 10th spot with Dale Jarrett 11th only 51 behind. Jeff Gordon moved up another notch in the standings to 12th and trails the final transfer spot by 58. Elliott Sadler, Kevin Harvick and Matt Kenseth round of the top 15. Both Tony Stewart and Jimmie Johnson clinched their birth in "The Chase" with their respective finishes.
Pit Stops
Jeremy Mayfield's win was the fifth of his career and second with Ray Evernham. His last win came at Richmond, 33 races ago.
Since starting the Dodge team in 2001, Ray Evernham has captured seven NEXTEL Cup Series wins with drivers Bill Elliott (4), Kasey Kahne (1) and Mayfield (2).
Dodge's two wins in 2005 have both come with Evernham Motorsports.
Mayfield became the 32nd driver to win from the 11th starting position. Starting Position Facts
Mayfield led the last six laps and pocketed $181,550 for the victory.
Scott Riggs' (second) scored his career-best NEXTEL Cup finish. It was his fourth top 10 of the season.
Tony Stewart (fifth) has now finished in the top 10 in the last nine races dating back to Michigan in June.
Kurt Busch (seventh) led the most laps (65) and finished seventh. It was the third time this season he has led the most laps.
The race saw seven caution flags for 30 laps and 19 lead changes among 13 drivers.
The average speed of the 200-lap race was 141.551 mph.
Lug Nuts
Kurt Busch items in his souvenir hauler already 50% off? Think Jack Roush has any intentions of keeping him next season? Usually teams that have driver or sponsor changes wait until about the last three or four races to make that big of a closeout.
Left rear tires blowing? What's the deal with that? NASCAR's new camber rule went into effect Sunday but it seems a whole new can of worms on the tire front was opened. NASCAR did check the tires and said all were cut from possible debris on the track.
It was sort of cool to watch Kenseth and Busch play trash collector and help clean off each other's grilles at 190 mph, but we still think whether teammates or not, once the green flag flies it's every man for themselves.
Garage Talk
"Slugger made the call to stay out. We saw the 24 do that and we knew if it went caution free we had a shot to win the race."
-Jeremy Mayfield
"I think my worst nightmare has come true. I've put us in a position where we've got to win the next couple of races to try and get into the chase."
-Elliott Sadler
"What I can tell you right now is that nothing is in stone yet (for 2006). I'm sure that things will be happening pretty quick here the next week or two."
-Scott Riggs
"Honestly, I sort of forgot about 'The Chase' after Pocono. We've had two terrible Poconos. In the last Pocono we were making ground, making ground, making ground and we lost so much."
-Matt Kenseth
"I definitely have mixed feelings about today. We took a gamble on fuel mileage and that paid off -- we finally got a break."
-Joe Nemechek
"We didn't take much of a gamble. I was gambling on a caution flag. If the caution would have come out, we would have had four skins and been able to put it to them."
-Greg Biffle
"We just really need to watch what we do here because we're in the chase a no-brainer unless we beat ourselves. It was a good car, but things just didn't work out."
-Mark Martin
"Just from the new news of being clinched in the final 10, going to Bristol is going to make that race a lot more enjoying."
-Jimmie Johnson

Ganassi shares his thoughts
But Dodge "won" the last NASCAR wind-tunnel test, and Dodge also "won" NASCAR's most recent engine-dyno test, so Ganassi certainly can't point a finger at ace engine man Ernie Elliott.
With ostensibly the best body and the strongest engines, shouldn't Dodge be winning more races? Yet, Chevrolet is atop the NASCAR leaderboard with 12 wins, followed by Ford with nine. Dodge has one, Kasey Kahne's at Richmond.
"We're at the wrong races. We've got to go to those dyno races and wind-tunnel races," Ganassi said with a laugh. "Just think how many fans will show up for those. We're hanging out at the wrong places."
