Inside Dish: Earnhardt, Eury to reunite

By Lee Spencer - SportingNews
Dale Earnhardt Jr. and former crew chief Tony Eury Jr. will be reunited in time for Sunday's race at New Hampshire. Eury has been Michael Waltrip's crew chief this season. Tony Gibson, Waltrip's car chief, is likely to succeed Eury as crew chief and stay with the No. 15 team for the remainder of the season. Waltrip is leaving with NAPA at the end of the year to drive the No. 23 car for Bill Davis Racing. Earnhardt is 17th in points and out of the Chase for the Nextel Cup, but he still has an outside chance to collect the $1 million prize that goes to the driver who finishes 11th for the season. Junior is 150 points behind 11th-place Elliott Sadler and also trails Jeff Gordon, Jamie McMurray, Kevin Harvick, Joe Nemechek and Dale Jarrett entering the Chase races. . . .
If it was hard to imagine Jeff Gordon finishing out of the top 10 in points for the first time since 1993, No. 24 fans might have something even more difficult to imagine: someone besides Robbie Loomis as Gordon's crew chief. Loomis has indicated he will step down at the end of the year. Loomis joined the team after the 1999 season, shortly after Ray Evernham's departure, and has been instrumental in Gordon's 23 wins over the past six seasons. There has been talk that car chief Steve Letarte will take over as crew chief and Loomis will move into a team manager position at Hendrick Motorsports. . . .
Kurt Busch was brimming with confidence after last week's victory at Richmond. The No. 97 team quickly adapted to the new points system last year, and crew chief Jimmy Fennig has saved tests for the final 10 weeks this year. . . .
Sharpie will grace Busch's car this weekend at New Hampshire, but there has been talk that the sponsor's parent company, Newell-Rubbermaid, could be interested in spending its money elsewhere in 2007. One possibility could be securing the naming rights to Bristol Motor Speedway. . . .
With Tony Eury Jr. moving back to the No. 8 team, Steve Hmiel will return to his previous post as head of DEI's research-and-development operation and concentrate on building the intermediate-track version of "the car of tomorrow (COT)" for 2007. Hmiel says that several organizations are participating in the process but it was important for DEI to get a head start, "since this will be the biggest change to come along in Cup since NASCAR moved to smaller cars in '81." Teams are expected to test their restrictor-plate COTs on October 3 after the Talladega race and their intermediate versions after the Atlanta event later that month. . . .
PPI Motorsports recently added Eddie Dickerson and James Ince to its roster. Dickerson will be instrumental in chassis development; Ince will oversee the assembly shop. Team owner Cal Wells says, "I want to keep changing things up until I find the right combination." Wells says that Tide will return as sponsor in 2006.

Ha ha ha. Very funny. Yes he didn't make the chase. It happens There are a lot of other good drivers and the #8 team just wasn't up to snuff this year. No excuses. They just didn't perform. They didn't deserve to be in. I'm glad they're getting back together. They should have never made the changes in the first place. Oh well. Here's to next year. Go Jr! Good luck to Smoke in the chase.
On a different note. Michael Waltrip is going to Bill Davis racing to run the 23 car!? Where the hell did that come from. I don't think anyone expected that. Is there any talk of a sponsor?

there was a quick comment on inside nascar last night on speed channel but I think it was a joke.
something about Ray Evernham doing it....but I belive this was a joke.
I just think this Earnhardt Eury thing is kind of weird. all year they have toted the
"nothing will chance untill the end of the season" line.

Ugh. That means they're gonna have trouble getting a sponsor for the 15 so DEI. will still be just a two car team. They're never gonna get ahead that way. They need a 3 car team but its so hard to find a sponsor. Look how hard it was for them to get a sponsor for the 1 car. The only reasonn they got that one is cuz Martin is bringing Bass Pro Shops up from the Busch series
