Im for the higher differential gears. because of:

ORIGINAL: http://sports.yahoo.com/nascar/news?...yhoo&type=lgns

...So if NASCAR can provide such life-saving innovations, why can't it simply alter things like differential gearing to slow the cars to a more reasonable speed, accomplishing virtually the same thing that plates do?

There actually would be an advantage if plates are traded for higher gears, as drivers would still be able to mesh the gas pedal without feeling like they're hitting a brick wall when they are in search of extra passing power.

Not only would that help eliminate some of the ridiculously tight, bunched-up pack racing, it also would give those drivers in the Chase a fairer, more consistent run.

And isn't that a key part of the reason why France implemented the Chase format in the first place?

In a sense, getting rid of the plates and using other methods to keep speeds reasonable would also give drivers the same thing they were supposed to get when NASCAR implemented new tire and rear spoilers coming into this season: more control of the race cars in their hands.

When speeds in the NHRA got dangerously high and bumped past 330 mph on a quarter-mile strip – in fact, the speeds played a role in the death of budding superstar Blaine Johnson in 1996 – drag racing's top sanctioning body implemented higher rear-end gears to slow Top Fuel and Funny Car dragsters to a more reasonable and safer level.

Granted, today's NHRA dragsters once again routinely exceed the 330 mph mark, but those cars have gotten safer and more speed-tolerant since Johnson's tragic death – just like NASCAR has gotten safer and more speed-tolerant since Earnhardt was killed.

NASCAR could easily follow the NHRA's lead. While the multi-car wrecks make for great theater and are guaranteed to make virtually every evening TV newscast, isn't it time to turn NASCAR telecasts from artificially scripted events into true reality shows?

For if such ludicrousness continues – particularly when the elements exist to get away from the plates once and for all – not only could fans start switching to NFL telecasts after their favorites are needlessly eliminated from the race, those in NASCAR race central may very well do the same.

And that's no rumor.

I also think that making the front end of restrictor plate cars weaker could also work.

I cant remember if it was durring or post race coverage, but they showed one of the front clips of these
cars. Extra tubing and a steel plate that wraps al the way around.

They have made the front end so strong that the drivers no longer have to worry about damaging the front.

Take away that streagth and the driverd might think twice about bump drafting.
