Ramcharger, Trailduster & Power Wagon Grrrr!! Tough Trucks! The Dodge Ramcharger and Plymouth Trailduster were full size SUV's that had good looks and brute strength. The Dodge Power Wagon was comparable to them in toughness, but came in pickup truck form only.

Default Buying a Power Wagon?

Hows it going everybody, i just signed up here first post. Next year i am considering getting a power wagon do you guys think its worth the money or could i just install the lockers and stuff in another truck my self and have an equal, maybe better truck for less? Obviously the power wagon comes all setup already and not having to do anything is a big selling point but it will be difficult to afford.

Does anybody know anything about these any annoying tendencies, is the winch any good etc? if the winch isn't any good can it be changed reasonably easily theres a hydraulic winch i saw that i wouldn't mind putting in if it would fit. I saw one post on here claiming it was underpowered any truth to that? how high can you lift it with out to many major modifications, it needs bigger tires.

One last thing i saw the 2009 ram pics on here you guys think they will still have a power wagon or if it would be worth it to wait? One thing i saw made it look like if you wanted a stick you would have to get a less powerful engine which is totally unacceptable. any way any opinions, thanks allot guys

Default RE: Buying a Power Wagon?

Hey Crash,

The Power Wagon is a great truck. No other manufacturer has a pick-up that is comparable. The fact is that you could build a similar truck, for that matter a more capable truck, on your own. The problem is that most people who buy a new truck don't want to instantly void the manufacturer's warranty bymodifying the vehicle. That's why most people do those things to older vehicles that are out of warranty anyway. The typical Power Wagon owner wants a new truck that is instantly highly capable AND still covered under a warranty. I, for instance, did not want to wait 4 or 5 years for my truck to "age" before I had the modifications I wanted. So for me, the PW was a great choice. It is, however, a double edge sword because if one wants to use the capabilities of the PW it opens up the possibility of some serious abuse of a very expensive vehicle.

As to the winch. You can always use a bigger winch. That being said, the PW winch is adequate for the truck. I know, I have used it several times in some bad situations that took some seriously creative winch techniques for self extraction. Suction mud will test any winch's capabilities, but it got me out in all instances. Even with a dead motor I was able to winch myself out of a hole on battery alone.

I have not gone bigger on tires, but from what I can gather the PW will fit 35's with some minor rubbing on the control arms at turning extremes. If I go with bigger tires I will go with akit from a company such as Kore that modifies suspension and control arms so that everything works the way it should without control arm rubs orrestricting the turning radius of the truck.

In the end, there is nothing wrong with buying a regular Ram and modifying it over time. There would be a lot of satisfaction as you build a vehicle in that fashion. It all comes down to money and time. Have you considered buying a late model truck and modifying it? That might be a good route if money is a concern. All I can say is the PW is a great truck and I have no regrets on my purchsae, but there are other ways to go about owning a similarly capable truck.

Good luck bud.

thanks allot, thats pretty much exactly what i was thinking. plus i saw one on the road yesterday and damn, it looks nice. i was never really sold on the ram body it always looked disproportionate to me thats the main reason i wanted the bigger tires so it looked right. but the power wagon has a very nice stance they way it is.

wont be till next year thats why im trying to get all the leg work done now, you know. Im pretty sure it'll be a power wagon though and even if its not it'll be a dodge they seem to be the only place where you can get a "mans" truck anymore

so you own one right? is yours stick and either way how fast is it. obviously for a truck speed is secondary but im wondering, that and im still toying with the idea of getting the diesel and thats alot slower i think so if the gas engine is a dog the diesel would be unbearable. im pretty much sold on the power wagon though.

I had an '06, But I now own an '07 Power Wagon and it's gas because that's the only way you can get it. Both automatics. Sorry to say, but no diesel option for the Power Wagon. I wouldn't say it's fast, but the 4.57 gears help make it somewhat "peppy" let's say. Is it underpowered? Probably. It would be great to have a diesel, but then again the sticker price would be pushing $60,000.00 - kind of scary. The significant torque advantage of the diesel would be a welcome thing off-road,although I'm sure one of those aftermarket Tuners could make a pretty good difference with the gas motor if you needed some extra juice. It'll never come close to diesel torque, but that's a limitation we'll have to live with.

yeah thats what i figured, if the gas engine is "peppy" the stick should help a little but the diesel is gunna be unbearable i guess, plus it doesnt come as a power wagon
