Ramcharger, Trailduster & Power Wagon Grrrr!! Tough Trucks! The Dodge Ramcharger and Plymouth Trailduster were full size SUV's that had good looks and brute strength. The Dodge Power Wagon was comparable to them in toughness, but came in pickup truck form only.

Default 1985 Ramcharger

Hello guys I am new to this site. I am on my second Ramcharger 1985 it is beautiful but VERY finiky. The latest thing is I can not get it to fire. It cranks fine. Changed rotor, cap, plugs, wires, pcv, fuel filter. It doesn't seem like it is getting gas. It usually take a lot of pumping to get it going because it sits for long periods. I don't smell any gas,I am getting spark. I am at the end of my knowlegde of engines, any suggestions? Laura

Is the choke adjusted properly?? Is it a 2 or 4 bbl carb?? Pull the breather off and have someone to move the throttle by hand and see if its squirting any gas down the throat of the carb. I am not sure but Dodge used the quadrajet 4bbl a couple of years and if its got one on it they are prone to leak out from the bottom where the jet wheels are and you said it sits for long periods of time that could be one possibility. I would first check to see if gas is squirting down the throat before I did anything else. Did you change your fuel filter? That could be another problem causing hard starting. I would look in these areas first, let us know if it still won't run...............

On my 87 Power Ram 4x4, 318, stock Holley 2bbl carb. I had a similar problem. Don't smell gas, spark is good. Wouldn't start at all if left for more than a day. Turns out that the fuel in the carb bowl would empty out because the inlet needle would stick. Installed new one from a carb kit and reset the float level. That seemed to do the trick for the most part. The problem would still crop up occasionally though, especially on a really hot day in summer. Seems that there may be some issues with the old Holley 2280 2bbl. Incidentally, I replaced everything also (fuel pump, plugs, wires, etc.) set the choke. I believe it could also be called vapor lock but usually that occurs after the vehicle has been driven. Hope this helps.

If it has the Rochester Quadrajet 4bbl then check out this link....

Could be it's time for a complete carb rebuild also?

Check fuel line/hose condition. Could have a small crack or hole that won't let (much) fuel out, but pulls air in. Could also be a weak fuel pump or, dependng on carb, it could be leaking the fuel out into the manifold while it sits, in which case the fuel pump has to self-prime every time you go to start it.
