Ramcharger, Trailduster & Power Wagon Grrrr!! Tough Trucks! The Dodge Ramcharger and Plymouth Trailduster were full size SUV's that had good looks and brute strength. The Dodge Power Wagon was comparable to them in toughness, but came in pickup truck form only.

Default Steering Column

I just got a Free 1988 Dodge Ramcharger 360 4 barrel carb Auto in very very very good shape but the steering column is all wobbly and i dont know how to fix this. A guy I know said if I tighten a few bolts in side the column it will be fine but I dont know for sure. It is a tilt steering column and I could use your help! If you got one for sale I can just swap out that will help too!

Feel your pain, I have an 86 with the same problem. From the searching I did, problems with the steering coupler were standard issue from Dodge! Ther are two fixes: one, rebuild the steering coupler. THat's a $10 or so fix from Dodge, but what I have read is you will need to do this every year, the design is poor and lets crud in until it fails again.

Two, ditch the factory equipment and replace with a Borgeson shaft that has a U-joint coupler. Summitt has these for $213. I just ordered one, will install today.

Here's some links that will help:

How to repair your original steering coupler: http://ramchargercentral.com/index.p...owtoshow;id=16

How to install the Borgeson shaft: http://ramchargercentral.com/index.p...howtoshow;id=7

Summit part order: http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

Summit was the cheapest I could find and you can get it overnight for an extra $25 -- factory was $25 more. Good luck to you!

My problem is not the shaft sadly but the column its self. Right where the tilt mechanism is it is all wibbly wobbly! I think finding a whole new column is going to be the pits!

You just need to properly tighten the 4 screws. The tilt column is actually built by Saginaw which is GM. I can't find the the specific articles that I wanted to post but here's one that will give you an idea. The screws should be sompletely removed one at a time and completely cleaned with alcohol or electronics cleaner and allowed to dry before putting loctite on them. Clean the screw hole threads also.
