Ramcharger, Trailduster & Power Wagon Grrrr!! Tough Trucks! The Dodge Ramcharger and Plymouth Trailduster were full size SUV's that had good looks and brute strength. The Dodge Power Wagon was comparable to them in toughness, but came in pickup truck form only.

Default Ramcharger steering column

I have an issue with a Ramcharger that my wife bought when I was gone. I can take the steering wheel and physically move it in circles without turning the wheel. I have the steering wheel off and can't figure how to get the rest apart. I have an idea but need some clarification. I have removed the center locking ring and now I am at the cover over the tilt knuckle before the shift lever. Also when you shift gears the whole column turns. It seems to me like there is a bearing at the top of the column that is missing or loose.

Thanks
Pat

The best thing you can do is find a good used good used column and replace it. I drove a 84 RC for 15 years and went through 2 columns. It's easier to replace the column than try to dig to far inside of the one you have.

I have to agree with BEAR. I have tried to rebuild them before and ended up with a pile of parts to toss in the recycle.
You will be money, time, and stress ahead if you just pull it and replace it with a good used one.
On a side note, you might want to keep your eyes open for a spare, as this is a common problem in dodges of the mid 80's.
I personally swapped mine out with one from a '92 W-250 and it was tight all the way up until I sold it.
