Default 1990 Dakota Ignition Key Light Bulb

Hi everyone. I tried replacing the #53 light bulb in the sleeve that illuminates the steering column ignition key switch on my 1990 Dakota. I bought two different bulbs from different auto centers and both are too long. The bulb stubs are too high so they don't go deep enough to fit into the socket retainer slots. I would prefer not to have to replace the steering column pigtail and socket for something that should be simple. Has anyone else encountered the same problem? Yes, both replacement bulbs are from China, one of them being the Sylvania brand. Thank you in advance to anyone who has a solution other than ignoring the light or changing the socket. ( And I have tried wreckers without success )
