Transmission interchange?

Transmission interchange?
I have a 2000 Dodge ram 4x4 SLT Laramie with 98k miles. I plow with it.
Saturday, I lost reverse. Just all of a sudden it's gone.
Looking for a used transmission, the junkyards say 2000-2001 is the same transmission.
Can anyone tell me why I can't use anything from 94-2001 ?
Another thing. How do I know for certain (without crawling under the truck) what model transmission I have? I've read there is a 46re, and 46rh. I realize one is hydraulic and the other electric. But the junkyards don't ask, so they must know based on the year and engine right? (otherwise I imagine the trans would not work based on the need/lack of an electrical connector).
Any advice would be appreciated.

Underneath 2000 (and up) model year Dodge trucks, the drive yokes on 9 1/4" axles have changed to a companion flange design.

I spoke to a trans guy who offered to try adjusting the rear band for $69.95.
I have the truck stuck in a ditch of snow near my barn, so I've been on the phone all morning trying to rent a front end loader to dig it out so I can get it to a trans shop. Only auto trans I've worked on have been 700R4 so this mopar stuff is a little new to me.

We shall see.
It bugs me that a used 46re is $800 with 120k miles and a used 4l60e is like $500 with less miles.
We will try the band adjustment. If not I have to justify if the truck is worth putting a used trans in or rebuilt or just trade it in for a ford. It is upsetting that the thing can't make it through 1 season of plowing, and when I came to this forum 5 posts right on the top are transmission problems..

He said the reverse valve or something split and fell apart. He said $10 part, but he has to remove the overdrive unit to replace it.
Parts and labor $300. I though that was fair considering how much fun automatics are to work on, and how much fun taking a transfer case off and splitting a trans on a truck that has been plowing all winter is.
He also said the fluid looked nasty and the trans probably won't last all that long.
On a good note, I looked at a nice F250 today.
