2002 Dodge Intrepid Transmission Problems
It runs fine. As soon as you hit about 45 to 50 miles per hour. The transmission jumps. Then it wont go up in gear. And it acts like it wants to over heat. The thing is, the car will slow down. But it wont shift down or up in gear. Usually when u let off the gas a little, a car will shift down. It wont even do that. But it doesnt do it all the time. Just about 50% of the time
Any help?

RE: 2002 Dodge Intrepid Transmission Problems
Sounds like "limp" mode and you only have 2nd gear. Your check engine light should be on in this case. Kurts right that a common problem on chrysler trannie's are the speed sensors. Check your codes and check your fluid, for color (shouldn't be brownish or burnt smell, but bright red) and make sure your level is good (motor on and tranny warmed up).

2002 chrysler intrepid limp mode
I have the same issues - took car to transmission place - selanoid replaced, same issues coming to stop car switches into lower gear and remains in that gear, stop turn off car and restart and problem dissappears until coming to a stop again.. change of selanoid did not correct problem - ordered computer system and advised it wasn't the problem - returned computer system and mechanic replaced valve pack ??? if I am not mistaken - car returned again and same problems are occurring - Does anyone have an answer - I am told these vehicles are known for this but no one seems to have the answer to correcting the problem any ideas or solutions would be welcomed...

Dodge Intrepid 04 goes into limp mode
11/6/11-Wanted to post my result from my 2004 Intrepid transmission problems. 130,000 miles on car. When slowing down would klunk and go into limp mode. Had to shut off and restart and would be fine until the next time. Sometimes wouldn't happen and sometimes would. I tried to fix it with replacing both sensors-that didn't help at all. After that I took it to the transmission shop and they said it definitely needed a new transmission and they would charge me $2000-$2500 to change out the tranny. Car isn't worth that so I had them just put it back together. Finally went to a reliable used tranny dealer (J---'s Auto Parts in Minnesota) and bought a used transmission for $250. My boyfriend and I installed it. Whew-big job, but doable. Car now runs like a dream. Shifts smoother than it ever did. Don't mess around with solenoid pack replacement or sensors..my experience: it's your transmission that needs to be replaced. Good Luck!! p.s. I love this car!!

My 2000 intrepid went into limp mode and speedometer did not work. I read here to try change input and output sensors it took about 30 minutes (only because it was 36 degrees out and had to warm up once) the car run's great now thank you very much for the info. the sensors cost me 21 dollars
