Weird "FUSE" light in mileage display

Weird "FUSE" light in mileage display
I have a 2000 that I bought this week with a weird problem. The car started displaying the word "FUSE" where the mileage is displayed. My dome light was not coming on at all also. Above the mileage the word "Door" would not extinguish.
I checked the fuses under the hood and inside. All of them were still good. It seemed to me that the car thinks the door is still open and there is a problem with a fuse somewhere.
I popped open the dome light cover and.... there was no bulb in the socket!! I got out my voltmeter and it was reading 12-14 volts in all configurations except with one fuse pulled under the hood (int lgt I think). I tried doors open/closed with car on/off and key in on and acc. It seems to me that the car thinks that the door is open all the time and the dome light stayed on all the time, therefore the previous owner simply pulled the bulb out to keep the battery from dying and the light on during night driving.
Has anyone seen this before? Any idea of what it is? A door switch maybe? Any experience with this problem is appreciated!! I did a couple of searches and came up with nothing.
Cheers!!

RE: Weird "FUSE" light in mileage display
I did that and the light stayed on ALL the time, except when I pull fuse #13. I fixed the "DOOR" above the mileage today (faulty switch I think, just did some wire tracing and shaking), but the dome light socket still has 12-14 volts ALL THE TIME.
I put a new bulb in, swapped (not replaced) the fuse with another 15 amp fuse. Same probelem-> the light stays on. Any idea what the stealership did for ragingneon last Sept? I got that thread in my search, but it did not help. I do not have a check engine light and no codes are popping up with the code check. Just "FUSE" in place of the mileage when you start up.
Any suggestions are appreciated!!

RE: Weird "FUSE" light in mileage display
The light comes on when a connection is made to ground. Typically, this happens when you open a door - power is always going to the light (as long as the fuse is in), but the light will only come on when grounded, which is where the door switch comes in (completes the circuit). So my guess is you have a short to ground somewhere in all that wiring, which includes all door switches and the illumination/dimmer switch.
Best of luck!

I have a 00 plymouth neon with the same problem, im guessing they are the same. Mostly the same anyways.
My question is: Is there a inexpensive and easy way to test for these types of problems. Like checking the door stop?
Any help would be greatly appericated!!

from the 2000 dodge manual
In the event that the instrument cluster looses
communication with all other modules on the PCI
bus, the cluster will display “nobus” in the VF display.
The VF display also displays “Door”, “Cruise”,
“Trac”, and odometer trip or total.
If the cluster does not detect voltage on the courtesy
lamp circuit, the message “FUSE” will alternate
with the odometer/trip odometer for 30 seconds after
the ignition is turned on and for 15 seconds after the
vehicle is first moved. The lack of voltage can be due
to the M1 Fused B(+) (IOD) fuse being open, a bad or
missing courtesy lamp bulb, or a circuit problem.
