EVAP control system code po441
Ok, got this code, EVAP control system code po441. Changed out the gas cap. did not take care of it. cleared code, came right back. Looking for next possable issue. I do not smell any gas, do not seem to be getting worse gas milage. did notice that the fuel neck looked pretty rusted. not sure if it rusted thru or not. could this trigger the code? Did notice it takes a bit longer to start when cold. 2-3 second delay when cold. can hear 3-4 engine turns. after it starts, runs fine. starts normal when engine is warm. Related? if not, what could cause the second issue? truck is a 97 ram 1500 4x4 with 5.9L. 127k on the clock

Since you've done the gas cap already, I would start checking the hoses. I know there's a charcoal canister under the pass side (behind the door) with a hose too. I pulled a similar code the other day, p0442, after blowing out my old gas cap then putting some atf on the gasket and clearing the code, it hasn't come back yet.

Had that happen to me. I changed the purge solenoid and the charcoal canister and that did it. Laramie was right when he said the charcoal canister is on the driver side outer frame rail. hope that helped...oh, and if you top off when fueling. Don't! That will cause your charcoal canister to get messed up.

I dont think there is an actual way to test the canister. I was lucky and it just turned out to be a faulty locking gas cap I bought. I would say, change the selonoid first, then try the canister. Also, look at the hoses on it, they may be cracked or non existent.
As far as hesitation on cold start up? I wouldnt think so. Could be the fuel pump telling you its time for a change, could be the gas, could be sticking valves.... on and on...

That's what caused my canister to take a dump on me. The overflow, some way some how, made it into the canister and messed that up as well as the purge solenoid. Lesson learned.
