For anyone else who might come across this thread, sometimes if your transfer case is out of adjustment or is worn, getting the truck rolling and then shifting the trans into neutral FIRST then moving the transfer case into 4h can engage it easier. Just remember, at least on the 1996, you can't shift into 4l while you are moving.

Alright guys promise me you all not, I say (NOT) to laugh . found the problem its 12:35 am and I just had to tell you . last week I removed the rug to be replaced and received the new one shortly after installed the new rug man a perfect job however did not noticed that one of the bolts holding the shifter plastic oval enclosure dropped under the shifter , I thought that it was just a single sheet of metal separating the inside of the truck and the outside of the truck well is not where that shifter plays up and down there is a double pocket the bolt dropped in and could not go anywhere it is totally enclosed so when the shifter goes backwards the bolt would not permit it to go past neutral . man I was starting to worry real bad , thank you all for your combine experince and the patience to deal with all of these , thanks again really appresiate all your time

Won't shift into 4H
Hey guys I got a 99 Dodge 2500 24v Cummins Auto that's doing the same problem as the original poster had. It will shift into 4L and N perfectly, but will just stay in 2H enough to drive it but it wobbles(the shifter handle) and won't go into 4H at all. I checked the linkage and there's nothing stopping it, I ain't no mechanic so if anyone has any other suggestions the'd be greatly appreciated! And sadly I checked there's no bolt blocking it! (Transfer Case goes 4L-N-2H-4H)

can also be caused by a worn 4x4 and or fork our 1999 ram did the same thing before it quit completely
not a big deal get the truck in the air or on jack stands remove the old actuator and dissemble the actuator and reinstall the fork or replace it
