something is boo-foodled in the t-case, and blocking the shift. try engine not running, go through all shift patterns back and forth, to see if you can shake it loose.

Don't you have to be in neutral to shift into either 4L or 4H?

with engine running, transmission should be in neutral for shifting in/out of 4L. you can shift in/out of 4hi while in gear (supposedly up to 55 mph) because it has synchronizers.

with engine off, it doesn't matter.

also, battery and computer is not involved, other than the 4wd indicator light in dash. its all purely mechanical.

Disconnect the shift linkage from the transfer case and attempt to manually shift it. It's much more likely that the shift linkage is out of adjustment or binding up than something being damaged in the transfer case.

Your situation sounds VERY wired. I don't understand how you can get into 4 lo. The only way to engage 4 lo is by having the trans in neutral, be under 5 MPH and go from 4 hi to 4 lo in a smooth motion and not stopping in the neutral on the t-case. If your truck is going to straight 4 lo then you have a real problem. Even the electronic 4x4's like my wife Tundra is the same thing. You engage 4 hi, put it in neutral, and then press 4 lo. It cannot go from 2 hi to 4 lo, it would destroy the transfer case.

Could you please explain how this would destroy the transfer case? There is no reason you must be in 4 high before shifting to 4 low.
