Superchips, First Impression!! ME LIKE!!
Burned out my tank of 89 last night and filled her up with premium, programmed the truck with the Performance tune, also changing my factory speed limiter to 130, just in case you know. Then I took her out for a ride.
The first thing I noticed was the shift points, later and firmer. I didn't get on her at first b/c she needed to warm up, but right out of the box I could feel the better shifting. Once she warmed up I took her down a back road and opened her up. Now I could REALLY feel the shift firmness, seemed to go through the gears a lot better getting more MPH gains before slamming to the next gear. WOW! She did get up and go to. Also noticed, with my stock tune it seemed like when I floored her, is had a little hesitation here and there while accelerating, the superchips seems to have gotten rid of that issue.
Now to the MPG's!!! When I put the tune in, I reset the overhead computer (Yes I know it lies to a lot of people, but it's never been more than a tenth off every time I manually calculate it). After a couple of back road runs, I got out into the city and just drove around for about 45 minutes. Stop and go, never getting about 45, and pulling into work just a second ago, my overhead is telling me that I'm averaging 15.9 since the tune!!! Of course I know I will have to manually calculate when I'm through with this tank, but that's a far cry better than the normal 12.5 - 13 I got in the city with the stock tune. Can't wait to get her out on the highway!
The only bad thing I've noticed is the MDS. Instead of just being able to hear it kick in and out, now I can feel it a little. Seems to have firmed that up as well. It's not bad, just a little jerk when she kicks back into a V8.
All in all, is it worth $400, well time will tell on the MPG gains, but for performance I'd say yes. Granted I didn't spend that much, got it used for $150 on eBay, I too was having a hard time justifying a $400 expense, but knowing now what it does, I would have paid the $400 if I couldn't find one used. I'll let you know after a couple of tanks what I'm getting...
