I have an '05 RAM 1500, Retired and planning to travel the states (a month in each). I want to get a 34' fithwheel. Problem is truck is rated for 9K and trailer is 13K. I don't want to buy a new truck (remember retired fix income now), was wondering could I change out the suspention and maybe the rear gearing? That's what brought me here. After reading some of the post here about different leaf springs and chasis, question still remains. What's the main difference between a 1500 and 2500? Would changing out suspention be good enough?
If you cannot handle buying up to a used diesel truck then I would consider a bumper pull trailer. They are cheaper than 5th wheels too. A 5th wheel that closer to be doable for your truck would be in the 27' range. They are still a bit heavy for 1/2 ton payload.
Thanks all, I've always wanted a diesel and am looking. I had a 27' pull trailer many many years ago and was told that a 5th wheel would be better for long hauls. I've got time to figure out what's more important, smaller trailer or bigger truck. Leaning toward bigger truck.
