Default Re-built tranny or replace leaking seals.

I have a 2001 46RE tranny in a class B RV Dodge 3500 with 129,000 mi. that is leaking fluid. I tried a Lukas additive which worked for a week. I called Aamco and they said that 100,000 mi on an RV is good and can replace the seals but recommended a rebuilt unit for $2400 with a 3 year warrantee, they don't give lifetime warrantees on RV's. I heard of people getting 200,000mi on these before replacing. Is he just trying to sell me a more expensive job or is 100,000 mi average until a repacement is needed?

It depends on the cost to repair the leak and the likelihood it will be a good repair. How much longer do you intend to keep the van? Some Class B's are very expensive to replace and well worth the investment.

When I take my van out it is usually a 5000 mile trip so the major components must be reliable. My parents are actually out in it in Newfoundland at the moment and the u-joints gave up.

It leaks from the converter housing. I think I'll get a reman unit with a 3 year warrantee. Autozone has one for $1600, Rock Auto's costs $1300, Aamco's $2400, and Jasper's costs $2600. All prices require a core return. I heard good things about Jasper units but have no idea on the others. All are dyno tested. Rock Auto requires a licensed shop to install. Has anyone used any of these units?

It's most likely the seal behind the converter witch is about a $10 part. You could just pull the trans away from the motor and replace it instead of the whole trans but that's your choice.

Thanks for the link, but I think I'll get a reman, I'll sleep better when I'm on the road. Now to choose one. I like the Rock Auto one, dyno tested and an modern facility.

I put the same 46re Jasper in my '01 B3500 w 5.2 liter... shopped at three different Jasper dealers and best price was $2350... so I had it done there

Jasper MAKES you buy a flush kit for your trans cooler (rad) for something like $60) in order NOT to void the warranty right off the bat, but instead of doing that at 13 years old I just bought a new rad and had all that front end stuff, hoses and such replaced at the same time.

I now have about 40K on the rebuilt, pulling a 4500# TT when I do drive it. It pulls hard and does not give me any problems. Just checked the tranny fluid and it is still purty clear red...

Jasper comes with most of the fluid you will need already in the tranny... I just needed something like 5 quarts to top everything off.

glad I got the Jasper... with all of their upgrades to the original bulit-in

I just got a price of $2500 for the Jasper unit installed so I think I'll go with it. Now that you mentioned the radiator mine's the original I think. I just bought it used 6 mos. ago. Any way to tell if it's been replaced?

it probably is OEM... check with the installer about the required trans cooler flush cost, Jasper requires it for warranty... flush is not necessary if you put in new rad with trans cooler in it, and you get a new rad too

my installer was not aware of the required flush BEFORE he got the reman unit in, but it was part of the install instructions and was not part of the quoted price

I had a '94 B250 that blew up the tranny at 113K, then this '01 had problems at 145K... I think you will be good to go another 140K with no problem after changing it out...

He said the flush was included and I hope that's taxes too.
