Demon Doesn’t Give Up Easily Against C8 Corvette

Despite its purpose built drag racing origins, the Demon still takes an expert hand to extract the most performance against stiff new competition.

This year, all eyes in the automotive world have been on the all-new, mid-engine C8 Corvette. There’s a lot to be excited about — it’s no Moar, sure, but it’s a proper sports car, one that can easily hold its own against the best Europe and Japan have to offer on a road course. But how does it handle on a drag strip compared to, say, a purpose built drag racing machine like the Dodge Demon?

To find out, YouTube channel Throttle House lined up the two American performance machines on a secluded strip of asphalt. It should come as no surprise that the Mopar is at a serious advantage when it comes to horsepower and torque.

The Demon also has a host of electronic aids that should improve the launch. Referring to the Corvette, one of the hosts says that “on paper, it shouldn’t stand a chance.”

Keep On Rollin’

However, these guys aren’t racing on VHT-prepared surface — they’re just doing this on regular asphalt. When the race starts, the Corvette surges forward with only the slightest hint of wheelspin, which is more than we can say for the Mopar. As one of the hosts explains, “The greatest trick that the Demon ever pulled was convincing the world that it could get traction.”

While the Demon gains ground on the Corvette, it’s not quite enough, and the Demon loses by a car length. The story would be different at an actual drag strip, though. Now, what about a roll race?

At first, the Corvette stays with the Demon, but it soon begins to fall behind, eventually losing by two car lengths. The Demon driver snarkily states “That C8 is fast — but it’s not fast enough.”

The Corvette’s excellent launch control, weight advantage, and overall superior weight distribution gave the Demon a run for its money. On a real drag strip, though, the story would be much different, and it’s likely that the Corvette would still put down a respectable time while eating some Demon dust.
