Is Dodge Adding a Second Challenger to Its Upcoming Lineup?
Word on the street from Mopar Insiders is that we may get a new-gen Dodge Challenger in addition to the current mainstay.
It has been some time since FCA introduced a new generation of the Dodge Challenger. The current Challenger has been rolling out in its third generation since 2008. Not that we’re complaining. The two-door mighty muscle car has delivered solid performance and you can’t beat its appearance.
Plus, it remains a stalwart presence in the automotive market. Of course, a new-gen would bring about a lot of positives, including some tasty upgrades. However, when automakers start introducing their new and upcoming rides, it can be at the expense of other models in their lineup. And we are not ready to say goodbye to the Challenger. Luckily, it appears we won’t have to. According to the latest rumors, it seems that Dodge will be introducing a new model, and keeping the current generation.
Mopar Insiders recently wrote that FCA might be ready to double our Mopar pleasure. First, the legend isn’t going anywhere, and is committed to staying in production until 2023. Hell, yeah. If that wasn’t enough, FCA is possibly going to double our pleasure.
“Our sources are saying that the Dodge product managers are looking at even running production of the current Dodge Challenger alongside the next-generation Dodge Challenger for a few months at least at the Brampton Assembly Plant in Brampton, Ontario,” they wrote. “Of course, this wouldn’t be until the 2023 production model year.”
This strategy has been employed by FCA in the past, and with great success. For example, the Ram 1500 Classic pickup is a fourth-generation Ram 1500, and it is sold alongside the fifth-generation Ram 1500.
The news is also good for fans of the track-slaying Challenger American Club Racer (ACR) nameplate,, which has long been expected to be released this year in celebration of the the Challenger’s 50th anniversary.
“We are still hearing talk about a new road course Challenger ACR to be coming later this year,” reported Mopar Insiders.
Overall, we think this is a shrewd move for Dodge. It allows Challenger drivers more options. Not into the next-gen upgrades? No worries, you can still haul ass with the current Challenger’s ample horsepower. Of course, all this conjecture is great, but we’ll still be looking at a bit of a wait as the upcoming next-generation Dodge Challenger and Charger won’t be hitting until 2022.
