Dodge Challenger and Charger

Dodge Challenger and Charger owners will soon receive a free update that adds an extra layer of protection against theft.

In this golden age of horsepower, Dodge offers a wide array of vehicles with ridiculous output. And that’s mostly a good thing, of course. But too much power in the hands of a few can be dangerous, as historians often tell us, and that includes folks like valets and others who might be entrusted with simply parking our Dodge Challenger or Charger, as well as thieves. Thankfully, the automaker has created a pretty nifty solution for that.

That solution is a new security mode that is a free update for owners of 2015+ Dodge Challenger or Charger models that are equipped with either the supercharged 6.2-liter V8 or 6.4-liter 392 Hemi V8. The update is free but it must be applied at a dealership, so owners can simply schedule an appointment to get it done. As of right now, Dodge expects the update to be available in late Q2 of this year.

The security mode requires anyone driving the car to enter the owner’s four-digit security code in order to unlock all of the car’s power. Otherwise, the vehicle’s engine speed is limited to 675 rpm, at which point it’s producing a mere 2.8 horsepower and 22 pound-feet of torque. Essentially, the enhancement applies a second layer of security encryption via Dodge’s Uconnect 4C infotainment system, which discourages key-spoofing thieves and prevents criminal police evasion and high-speed chases involving stolen vehicles.

“More than 150 cars are stolen every day in the United States,” said Tim Kuniskis, Dodge Brand Chief Executive Officer, Stellantis. “For any car owner, it’s terrible, it’s a hassle and it’s a personal violation. Though statistically rare, car thieves have targeted the high-horsepower Dodge muscle cars, and we want the Dodge ‘Brotherhood’ to know we’re taking quick action and covering their backs.”

Of course, Dodge has no obligation to pursue such features nor offer them free to owners. But the fact that it does is obviously a nice benefit for its loyal customers. Even better, the automaker stated that this likely won’t be the last security update it rolls out, saying that it “will continue to pursue other enhancements to vehicle-theft deterrence in order to protect owners’ investments.” That’s bad news for thieves and great news for the rest of us.
