Tuned Dodge Demon Takes on Lamborghini on the Quarter-mile
Top Gear gives the spotlight to the SRT Demon scorching the track against an Aventador. We almost feel bad for the Lambo.
In a recent episode of Top Gear, host Matt LeBlanc is driving a sexy, strapping Dodge Challenger SRT Demon in the desert. “That might be the most addictive throttle pedal I’ve ever experienced,” he says excitedly as he sprints along. We get a nice series of gorgeous, glorious Demon footage as LeBlanc talks about the car.
“This isn’t some stripped down sports car. This is a big, comfy cruiser,” he says. “There’s no supercar spec double-clutch gearbox. It’s just a big automatic. To be honest, it’s just a Dodge.” But, as we know, “just a Dodge” can kick some serious ass.
This Demon comes with the one dollar option. For just a dollar (on top of that 85K) Dodge gives buyers the option of buying the Demon Crate. This includes two slim front wheels (perfect for drag racing), a performance air filter, new ECU, performance tools and more. And this Challenger SRT Demon is getting the benefit of all the crate has to offer.
The crate-tuned Demon is rocking a mighty 840 horsepower. This makes it the most powerful V8 production car. So what to do with this monster? Yeah, it is time to take it to the track.
First LeBlanc warms up the tires. We would watch and listen to this all day.
But the Demon didn’t just come to play, it came it work. And LeBlanc takes it on a trial launch.
“That is incredible!” he says. “That won’t get old ever. You literally couldn’t fall off a cliff faster than that! Wow. Oh hell, I’m doing that again!” And he does, enthusiastically saying “That is addictive!” The Demon’s launch control is especially impressive, and keeps going strong.
However, now it is time to race. The competitor is a 4WD V12 Lamborghini Aventador. Four times the cost of a Dodge. Seems intimidating.
It is not really a shock to Dodge fans that the Demon destroys the Lamborghini. And it’s not really a shock to LeBlanc, but it is a thrill.
“Just roasted that Lambo!” LeBlanc yells. “Damn! That is big American balls, baby!”
With a 0 to 60 time of 2.3 seconds, the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon is a miracle of muscle cars. As LeBlanc says, “This is the fastest accelerating road car in history.”
