The Dodge Charger is entering its 4th year of
production, and while the interior and exterior changes of the 2009 Dodge
Charger are subtle, but the big news for ’09 is in the drivetrain.  The 5.7L Hemi engine offered in the Charger
R/T jumps up to 368 horsepower and 395 lb-ft of torque (previously 340hp and
390lb-ft of torque), making it the most powerful car in its class.  This power is achieved without sacrificing
economy thanks to Dodge’s Multiple Displacement System, and the 2009 Charger
will have an indicator on the dash reading “ECO” when the system is in its fuel
saving, 4-cylinder mode.

The all wheel drive system in the Dodge Charger also gets an
upgrade to help improve the fuel economy of the AWD models.  This new system features a new Front-Axle Disconnect
system, coupled with an Active Transfer Case, so not only is it the most
powerful car in its class, but it is the only vehicle that offers this all
wheel drive technology.

There have been some minor redesigns to the taillights, new standard
aluminum wheels on the Charger SE, a relocated radio antenna (now on the rear
window), and a new more fuel-friendly gear ratio offered for the 2009 model,
but the news of increased power could likely boost the sales of the Charger for
the upcoming new model year.

Full Press Release from Chrysler:

2009 Dodge Charger — Even More Bold, Powerful,
Capable and Fuel Efficient

Auburn Hills, Mich., Sep 1, 2008  –  The Dodge
Charger is a modern, four-door coupe that combines rear-wheel-drive
muscle-car power, sports-car handling and leading-edge technology to deliver
a thrilling driving experience with improved fuel efficiency and increased
horsepower from a new-generation 5.7-liter HEMI® V-8 engine in 2009.

The 2009 all-wheel-drive Dodge Charger models are now equipped with Active
Transfer Case and Front-axle Disconnect. No other major manufacturer offers
these two independent technologies together. The unique system seamlessly
transitions between rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive with no driver
intervention. When all-wheel drive is not required, the system automatically
disconnects the front axle and opens the transfer case from the drivetrain to
reduce friction and rotational mass. Automatic all-wheel-drive operation may
be activated by outside temperatures, wheel slip or by other predetermined
conditions. All-wheel-drive mode can also be manually selected by shifting
the gear selector to Auto Stick mode or by activating the windshield wipers
for an extended period of time.

Enabling the vehicle to switch between two-wheel drive and all-wheel drive
improves fuel economy on all-wheel-drive Dodge Charger models by up to one
mile per gallon (mpg) on the highway, while still providing the outstanding
performance and handling inherent in rear-wheel drive. To inform the driver
when he or she is in two-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, the Electronic Vehicle Information
Center
(EVIC) indicates
when the switch is made.

The 2009 Dodge Charger R/T rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive models
both feature the new-generation 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine with a five-speed
automatic transmission that produces an estimated 368 horsepower (274 kW) and
395 lb.-ft. (536 N•m) of torque. The 5.7-liter HEMI continues to offer
fuel-saving Multi-displacement System (MDS) technology. MDS seamlessly turns
off fuel consumption in four cylinders when V-8 power is not needed,
improving fuel economy as much as 20 percent. To inform the driver when he or
she is in four-cylinder mode, the EVIC now automatically displays “ECO” when
the switch is made, providing drivers the opportunity to modify their driving
habits in order to achieve better fuel economy.

On the exterior, the rear styling of the Dodge Charger is refreshed for
2009 with a bold, retro-style taillamp design that is distinctively Dodge.
Recessed circle cutouts give the taillamps added dimension over the previous
design and provide enhanced definition to each taillamp’s two circular lamps.

On the interior, accents in the Dodge Charger R/T are extended to the
entire lineup for 2009 with the Dodge Charger SE receiving satin silver door
trim spears, satin silver center console cup holder rings and satin silver
instrument panel bezels. Now standard, light-emitting diode (LED) lighting
appears on all models in the front cup holders and standard LED map-pocket
lighting on the Dodge Charger R/T provides additional driver convenience.

DESIGN
American muscle-car styling is evident in the 2009 Dodge Charger. The
coupe-inspired styling and fastback design create a modern statement of power
with all the versatility of a four-door sedan.

The rear styling of the Dodge Charger is refreshed for 2009 with a bold,
retro-style taillamp design that is distinctively Dodge. Recessed circle
cutouts give the taillamps added dimension over the previous design and
provide enhanced definition to each taillamp’s two circular lamps.

On the interior, accents in the Dodge Charger R/T have been extended to
the entire lineup for 2009 with the Dodge Charger SE receiving chrome door

ENGINEERING
Modern technologies have made it possible to bring a 21st century muscle car
to market with the ride and handling characteristics inherent in rear-wheel
drive. The 2009 Dodge Charger rear-wheel-drive models feature outstanding
performance and handling, near 50-50 weight distribution and unique suspensions
that provide just the right level of driving characteristics for Dodge
Charger customers.

Enabling the vehicle to switch between two-wheel drive and all-wheel drive
improves fuel economy on all-wheel-drive Dodge Charger models by up to one
mpg on the highway, while still providing the outstanding performance and
handling inherent in rear-wheel drive. To inform the driver when he or she is
in two-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, the Electronic Vehicle
Information Center

(EVIC) indicates when the switch is made.

to offer fuel-saving MDS technology. MDS seamlessly turns off fuel
consumption in four cylinders when V-8 power is not needed, improving fuel

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
