Fast & Furious 9 Mid-Engine Charger

Revamped classic star car joins custom Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody to dazzle fans in ninth installment of the franchise.

What do you think of when the Fast & Furious franchise? Only the wildest rides committed to film, for starters. What started as just a street-racing film has grown to be a cavalcade of action not seen since the end of the Eighties, all of handled by a team of badasses and their rides, including the classic Charger built (and rebuilt, and rebuilt again, and again, and so on) by Dominic “Dom” Toretto (as long-portrayed by Vin Diesel).

Looks like Dom’s ride’s been rebuilt again for the ninth installment of the main franchise, Fast & Furious 9. According to CarBuzz, the Charger’s engine is now behind his head in a mid-engine configuration.

The custom Charger, a ’68 model this time around, was built by SpeedKore, according to Motorious; the company also built actor Kevin Hart’s 1970 ‘Cuda, which was involved in a major accident in the morning hours of September 1 on the twists and turns of Los Angeles’ Mulholland Drive.

Dom’s famous Charger won’t be the only one in the new film, though. Diesel posted a video on his Instagram of a custom 2020 Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody, whose role isn’t yet known, other than looking badass in whatever chases it takes part in.

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty caught the mid-engine Charger on the streets of Rustavi, Georgia (approximately 16 hours east of Atlanta) rolling alongside a silver-and-black Chevy Nova in a slow-speed run away from a hardcore big rig with a plow meant to throw cars out of its way. Filming has taken place there and other locales in the Caucasus since late August, and is expected to wrap up by the end of September.

As for what’s motivating the mid-engine Charger, it’s not known what exactly resides just under the rear glass. Car and Driver believes it’s supercharged, though. Maybe it’s a Hellcat? And just like the 2020 version, the matte-black hero comes with wide fenders, further emphasizing the Coke-bottle styling the second-gen Charger made famous all those decades ago.

Should you be down to check out the latest installment of the long-running franchise, Fast & Furious 9 will rock the silver screen on May 22, 2020.
