Ram 1500 G/T package features Mopar intake and exhaust, along with unique items inside and out.

For quite some time, there have been rumors of Ram 1500 TRX with a naturally aspirated engine; sort of like a TRX Light. The rumors insisted that the naturally aspirated TRX would be more off-road capable than the Rebel while costing less and offering less power than the TRX. As expected, the rumors regarding a lower performance Ram 1500 TRX were wrong, but there is a new G/T package for the 2022 model year and it does borrow some items from the TRX. However, it is not an off-road-specific package, nor does it have any of the key performance features of the TRX.

The new-for-2022 G/T package is available on Ram 1500 Laramie and Rebel trim levels, adding a few Mopar performance bits, unique styling components and some features borrowed from the TRX inside. It should be noted that this includes shift paddles and a console-mounted shift lever rather than the hated shift knob from every other non-TRX model.

“Ram has a strong history of performance trucks and the Laramie G/T and Rebel G/T models add to that while expanding the light-duty lineup with the segment’s best combination of performance, capability, luxury and technology” said Mike Koval Jr., Ram Brand Chief Executive Officer – Stellantis. “Ram 1500 G/T buyers will enjoy this combination of performance and luxury that the newest additions to our versatile lineup offer.”

Again, for all of those Ram fans who hate the shift knob, the 2022 G/T package is your best chance to get a new pickup without the knob and without paying TRX money, but this is far more than just a better shifter.

The G/T Package

The G/T package for the 2022 Ram 1500 Laramie and Rebel is only available with the Crew Cab and the 5.7-liter Hemi with the eTorque hybrid system, but buyers can pick rear-drive or four-wheel-drive.

Key features of the 2022 Ram 1500 G/T package begin on the outside with a Sport Performance hood, package-specific decals a Mopar “cold end” exhaust system and the slick Ram AirFlow cold air intake system. On the inside, the G/T package adds the Performance Pages app from the TRX and many other high performance Dodge and Jeep products, a metal pedal kit, front bucket seats with the G/T logo, steering wheel mounted paddle shifters and the console mounted shift lever.

The 2022 Ram 1500 Laramie G/T starts at $55,480 and the Rebel G/T starts at $55,375, neither of which include the $1,695 destination fee. Both of these packages will officially go on sale during the third quarter of 2021.

While this is far from the TRX Light that the less repeatable outlets predicted, the Ram 1500 Laramie and Rebel with the G/T package will appeal to those buyers who want something a little sportier – or those buyers who simply want to avoid the shift knob. If nothing else, those prospective Ram 1500 buyers who want a truck with roars with Hemi power, the G/T package offers a luxury option and an off-road-sport option, both of which look great inside and out.

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
