Power Wagon has 14.3 inches of ground clearance, 33-inch tires, 12,000-pound winch, sway bar disconnect & locking diffs.

Last year, more than two million people made their way out to the Texas State Fair in Dallas. Many of them probably showed up so they could take a ride on the 212-foot-tall Texas Star Ferris wheel or take a picture standing next to “Big Tex,” the 55-foot-tall official greeter to fairgoers. Then again, given how much Texans love trucks and SUVs, there’s no doubt the Texas Auto Show generated a good portion of those attendance figures.

This year, the Texas Auto Show, which launched in 1913, features roughly 400 models from manufacturers including Ford, Chevrolet, Toyota, GMC, and Ram. Many of those are inside giant exhibition halls. The others are outside in the “Truck Zone,” 175,000 square feet of exhibits, displays, and interactive events. That’s where FCA kicked off the Texas Auto Show media day and introduced the 2019 Ram 1500 Rebel 12, 2018 Ram 2500/3500 Heavy Duty Longhorn Ram Rodeo Edition, and 2018 Ram Power Wagon Mojave Sand.

It’s only logical that this truck exists. The 1500 is all-new for 2019. The Rebel is a badass niche model with attitude and presence. Luxe trucks with tons of features and creature comforts are big business these days. So, it makes perfect sense that Ram now offers all of the Rebel’s capabilities along with the trick infotainment (namely the stunning 12-inch Uconnect 4C touchscreen) and high-end features available in some of its other 1500 models.

The exterior is what we’ve come to expect from the Rebel: a lift, 33s, locking rear diff, skid plates, and tow hooks. The inside is what sets the Rebel 12 apart from its regular sibling. The seats are covered in leather and heated in the front row. Engineers surrounded those with the new 900-watt, 19-speaker Harman Kardon surround sound package, which Ram calls “the finest audio system ever available in a pickup.” Then there’s the 12-inch Uconnect 4C touchscreen with navigation and SiriusXM with 360L on-demand content. That’s what puts the “12” in Rebel 12 and makes it a best-of-both-worlds truck. And we have no doubt that that slick tech is also going to bring customers into Ram dealerships when the Rebel 12 goes on sale, with prices starting at $46,990.

Ram reportedly sold 56,447 vehicles in September. Dealers moved more than 36,000 Ram 1500s, contributing to Ram’s best September light-duty retail and total sales ever. The automaker would probably say those figures come from the fact that it listens to its customers. Fair enough. But Ram’s success also stems from the brand’s ability to speak to its customers. One of the ways it does that is by aligning itself with the industries and terms that are familiar and important to certain truck buyers. For instance, Ram Nation is about helping Americans who have been victims of natural disasters. For farmers, there are Ram Certified Agriculture Dealerships and even pickups and chassis cab trucks available in Case IH Red and New Holland Blue.

Now there’s the 2018 Ram 2500/3500 Longhorn Ram Rodeo Edition. What yells “Truck!” at potential buyers more than a rodeo-themed heavy duty pickup? Based on the Laramie Longhorn, the Ram Rodeo Edition mixes upscale materials with features that are useful for hauling heavy loads.

It’s dressed in body-colored bumpers and side-steps, and “LONGHORN” tailgate badging. Six colors are available: RV Match Walnut Brown, Brilliant Black Crystal, Bright White, Pearl White, Delmonico Red, and Granite Crystal Metallic. Single-rear-wheel 2500s and 3500s come with 20-inch aluminum wheels; painted wheel pockets are optional. The 3500 duallys get 17-inch polished aluminum wheels. A skid plate package protects the underbelly from rough ranch terrain.

For towing, the Ram Rodeo Edition offers a load-leveling rear air suspension, a bed-view camera, and a fifth wheel/gooseneck trailer prep package. Getting into the cargo box is easier thanks to a Mopar bed step.

Derek Shiekhi's father raised him on cars. As a boy, Derek accompanied his dad as he bought classics such as post-WWII GM trucks and early Ford Mustang convertibles.

After loving cars for years and getting a bachelor's degree in Business Management, Derek decided to get an associate degree in journalism. His networking put him in contact with the editor of the Austin-American Statesman newspaper, who hired him to write freelance about automotive culture and events in Austin, Texas in 2013. One particular story led to him getting a certificate for learning the foundations of road racing.

While watching TV with his parents one fateful evening, he saw a commercial that changed his life. In it, Jeep touted the Wrangler as the Texas Auto Writers Association's "SUV of Texas." Derek knew he had to join the organization if he was going to advance as an automotive writer. He joined the Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA) in 2014 and was fortunate to meet several nice people who connected him to the representatives of several automakers and the people who could give him access to press vehicles (the first one he ever got the keys to was a Lexus LX 570). He's now a regular at TAWA's two main events: the Texas Auto Roundup in the spring and the Texas Truck Rodeo in the fall.

Over the past several years, Derek has learned how to drive off-road in various four-wheel-drive SUVs (he even camped out for two nights in a Land Rover), and driven around various tracks in hot hatches, muscle cars, and exotics. Several of his pieces, including his article about the 2015 Ford F-150 being crowned TAWA's 2014 "Truck of Texas" and his review of the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider, have won awards in TAWA's annual Excellence in Craft Competition. Last year, his JK Forum profile of Wagonmaster, a business that restores Jeep Wagoneers, won prizes in TAWA’s signature writing contest and its pickup- and SUV-focused Texas Truck Invitational.

In addition to writing for a variety of Internet Brands sites, including JK Forum, H-D Forums, The Mustang Source, Mustang Forums, LS1Tech, HondaTech, Jaguar Forums, YotaTech, and Ford Truck Enthusiasts. Derek also started There Will Be Cars on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube.
