Vipers fall short of previous success in return to LeMans

This past weekend, the SRT Viper GTS-R teams returned to the 24 Hours of LeMans race but as has been the case in the American LeMans Series – they fell well short of the success seen by the previous generation Viper endurance racers.  However, it should be noted that both of the Vipers finished – unlike 14 of the 56 cars that started the race.

Both SRT Viper teams got off to a rocky start with qualifying positions of 46th overall (10th in the GTE Pro class of 12 cars) for the #53 Viper driver by Marc Goossens, Dominik Farnbacher and Ryan Dalziel and 50th overall (11th in GTE Pro) for the #93 Viper driven by Tommy Kendall, Jonathan Bomarito and Kumo Wittmer.  Due to poor weather conditions prior to the qualifying sessions, both Viper teams were unable to log the amount of practice time originally planned, which obviously had a direct impact on their qualifying times and efforts during the race.

During the race, both teams faced the typical issues that can plague a racecar during a 24 hour long endurance race including tire and alternator problems but unlike so many other cars in the field – both Vipers were still running when the checked flag waived.  At the end, the #53 Viper (recognized as the #91 Viper for ALMS fans) finished 25th overall and 8th in the GTE Pro class while the #93 Viper finished 32nd overall and 9th in the class.  42 cars finished the race with 10 of those competing in the GTE Pro class along with the Vipers.

The race was won by the Audi e-Tron Quattro LMP1 car which completed 348 laps during the course of the 24 hour shootout while the GTA Pro class was won by a Porsche 911 RSR that completed 315 laps.  The #53 Viper completed 306 laps, leaving Goossens, Farnbacher and Dalziel 9 laps off of the class pace and 42 laps off of the winning pace while the #93 car was able to complete 301 laps in 24 hours.

While 25th and 32nd is a far cry from the victories claimed by the Team Oreca Viper back in 1998, 1999 and 2000, the modern Viper teams continue to fight variables beyond their control (like diminished practice time due to rain) while also dealing with the downsides of having their power output restricted under the association rules.  However, the fact that both teams finished the grueling race is a testament to the quality of these modern race cars and as all of the drivers and teams continue to grow from these races – a podium spot could be in the future as the Vipers continue through the 2013 ALMS schedule.

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
