1972 Plymouth Fury 400 Custom Suburban Station Wagon

‘Couth’ 1972 Plymouth Fury 400 Custom Suburban Station Wagon is a rolling piece of Americana that the British owner is in love with.

Oftentimes we get caught up in the latest models. Or we focus on six-figure restomods or restorations. And we tend to get swept away by cars that boast 4-digit horsepower figures. But we must remember that the real key to being an automotive enthusiast is passion. It is not money or power, but just the love of a particular automobile. Like this swanky ’72 Plymouth Fury 400 Custom.

The car doesn’t have to be the fastest or have the shiniest paint job or the biggest wheels. There are many aspects of a car that can make it endearing to an owner. Sometimes, it is just the way a car looks or its rarity that will draw someone towards it. And that is what we are highlighting today. Although it is rare, this Fury 400 Custom Suburban is not worth a lot of money–yet it still has a lot of value.

This week’s “Wicked Wednesday” is all about this 1972 Plymouth Fury 400 Custom Suburban Station Wagon. It is owned by a British named Mark. And Mark seems to have a thing for American cars. And this particular car is about as American as they get.

Not only does it have that “Wagon Queen Family Truckster” vibe. But it has the perfect patina that really sets the car apart. This is a car that Mark loves and despite it not being a high dollar piece of machinery everyone else seems to love it as well. A video was posted on the Hand Built Cars YouTube channel which covers everything that makes this car stand out from the crowd.

Looks

Mark openly admits that he bought this car based on just the way it looked. To him the patina was the main selling point. And we agree. The car is perfectly aged. But he wanted to up the American vibe of the car. So, he went to work buying as many items as this Briton could think of to represent the United States. We think he did a great job. We could just imagine the car looking just like this in 1972 as it was getting ready for a family vacation. “Now, I owe it to myself to tell you Mr. Griswold that if you are thinking of taking the tribe cross-country, this is the automobile you should be using.” – Ed, the car salesman.

Engine

It is not very fast but at least it gets terrible gas mileage. The car has only covered 26,000 miles and the engine and transmission are all original. And they were not a very efficient pair. According to Mark the top speed is governed by how much fuel is in the tank.

He says that if he puts his foot down the car will top 100 mph, but not for long as it will quickly drain its tank. If there ever was a car that the EV crowd would have fits over, it would be this 1972 Plymouth Fury 400 Custom Suburban Station Wagon. And that makes us like it just that much more.

Fun

Mark loves this car. He loves to own it. He loves to drive it. It is just something that he really enjoys. And again, that is the whole point of this hobby. Having a Dodge Demon is great too. But this old wagon with paint peeling off can bring an enthusiast just as much joy. It is nice to be reminded of that from time to time. No matter what car you have, if you love it, that is all that matters.
