Default Speedometer/Shifting Gears not working

I have a 99 Avenger with 84,000 miles on it. Driving to work today, it was perfectly fine. Not a problem in the world. Leaving work, I noticed my speedometer wasn't working. As I acelerated, I noticed the car would not shift gears. It is staying in one gear only. I pulled over and checked what I could. Fluid levels all fine. Trans fluid is a clear/red color. A relatives house wasn't far from where I pulled over, so I drove slowly there. While driving over there, the Check Engine Soon light came on. I'm at a loss over the speedometer not working AND the gears not shifting. Any clues what could cause this? Thanks for any help!!

Output speed sensor is bad/unplugged ... sticky on top showing tranny info shows location ... that puts it in limp mode (stuck in second)

Thanks for the reply. I was hoping for some kind of sensor. Thanks for the info on the tranny. Good to know.

In the tail of your transmission, there's a gear that connects to the main gear on your tranny shaft. As the shaft spins, it moves the speedo gear, thus moving the cable to your speedo. Many times, that main gear on the shaft moves away from the speedo gear. It's usually held in place with a small metal clip that is slid in a grove in the shaft and the gear itself. If this comes out, the gear will slide away, and your speedo will no longer work. So in other words, you'll need to take the tailshaft off to fix it.

Ours uses an ELECTRONIC sensor nothing to do with what you list
