Speed Sensor Question
I've had my 97 Avenger for about a year now, and it's given me nothing but problems. The guy who owned the car previously all but drove the poor thing into the ground, but I still mostly love the car. Sometimes.
I'm so glad though that a good number of the issues I have with the car are typical to the car itself so I can ask a million questions to those who've already dealt with the problems. (Don't worry, I won't. Just one.)
We've determined that an 02 sensor is bad, and that'll be replaced... oh someday. The current issue on my plate though is the speed output sensor. I know it's gone out on my baby, and I even have the part to fix it... but I have absolutely no idea where it is. I even have a diagram of my transmission, but I still can't seem to find it to switch it out. Has anyone done this themselves before? I would love to keep thing out of limp mode, even though I've gotten so used to dealing with it. (Every third time the car gets below 20 mph or a certain rpm, it refuses to shift into the correct gear, so we do the foot off gas, shift into neutral, car off, car on, shift down thing so it'll run in the proper gear.)
I spent a good chunk of my afternoon digging around in my engine and came up with nothing but dirt. And the discovery that I have an oil leak somewhere.

Master tech: The speedo works perfectly. Whenever I get pulled over, what the cops say and what the speedo shows seem to match fairly well. :P And the oil never makes it to the ground, it gets stopped by all of the moving hot bits in my car. Is black and crusty a suitable technical answer?
bad venge: Thanks, I have that information, but call me stupid, it's a whole lot harder to locate on the car itself than on the picture of the transmission.

You may have other problems with the transmission than just a sensor. Ck the fluid, make sure its not low. And is the fluid burnt? Because you could have a seal or clutches slipping. Have someone ck the CVI on the transmission and post the U/D O/D reverse 2/4 and L/R . And I'll be able to tell if you are in specs.

Ck the relays on the firewall thats above the master cylinder, one of them is for the reverse lites. I'm sorry i just read your post a 2nd time and notice you have a manual trans. Use a jump wire across the back-up switch, if it lites up, replace the switch.

yes 5-speed manual the year is 1996 I even inspected the back up lamp fuse didn't check it with a test light because I had to punch in. Is the back up switch located on top of the transmission anywhere near the shift levers? Will I have to remove the battery?
