Default 97 Dodge Avenger whine

Hi guys,

my brother has a 97 dodge avenger es (i think it's an es, it has a v6)
for some reason there is a whine that seems to come from the engine. the whine is there at idle and during acceleration. it's there as long as the engine is running. the whine can be heard from all angles of the car

i am wondering if anyone knows anything about this.
thanks

I'd check the belts/tensioners first

Does it go away when the A/C is turned on or off? Mine does that right now and i figure the bearings in the magnetic clutch are about to go

Whine or groan? Turn your steering wheel from left to right a full turn both ways, Does it get louder, check your Power steering Fluid level and color should be red, unless it was changed to clear. Also when the vehicle is running check the fluid in your powersteering fluid resivior for air bubbles in the fluid.

Does it screech a start up? Belts - check for cracks, glazing, tears, parts missing or any other excessive wear.

Pull off the V-belts and ck the idler pulley for the A/C. The bearings do go bad on these engines.

it is an automatic (dont know if this would any useful information, but still)

my brother says that the whine is not effected by the A/C

The noise is a whine... sounds similar to this supercharger whine at 21 seconds http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72V8f...eature=related

Thanks for helping guys.
