Default D@mn multiple misfire code !!!

How does the computer detect this 'multiple misfire', and set the code ?
Ever since a no start issue, when I changed the CPS, I've had the dreaded Multiple misfire CEL
I reset it, checked plugs leads dizzy cap and rotor, and all are fine. It will run for 50-60 miles with no problem, then on comes the CEL ............even though it doesn't feel like the motor misfired at all, not so much as a hiccup !
What else can I check, could it be the CPS I bought is bad ?
Please help, it's driving me nuts !!!

mine is doing the same thing.. it is not missing yet i am getting a multiple random misfire code also.. when you say CPS are you talking about the cam pos sensor or the crank pos sensor... i think the Crank Pos. sensor tells the ecu when to fire.. this is gonna be the one i change first..

It was the crankshaft position sensor. The camshaft position sensor is part of the distributor, and therefore is BIG bucks, tho' I don't see how the camshaft position sensor should cause a misfire.
The CEL started flashing again this morning (indicating a misfire), but again no physical signs of a misfire ..........GRRRRRR

Just found a site on the internet, which stated ' a corroded wire behind the drivers side headlight sometimes causes a flashing CEL' , although it was for a 95 , I'm going to check that out before I try the dizzy

Check out the 'trouble spots' section
It's a long shot, but I'm going to try this before I replace the dizzy, cap, wires, and plugs, as mine are only 6 months old.
There's got to be a simple sloution, as there's no way I actually have a misfire.
Corroded connection would seem logical, as my troubles all started after a massive rain, and if water got in the connection they're talking about ..........hmmm, corrosion ?
By the way mine's a 98 V6
