Default '98 dodge avenger - lookin for upgrades

hey all...i've got a new '98 dodge avenger (2.4l 6cyl) and i reallllly wanna start putting some money into it.

i don't wanna spend too much money at this time, probably no more than $300.

so, i wanna know what would be the best thing to start with? i know i wanna get a cold air intake but is the $250 K&N worth it? i mean all they are would be a pipe and a filter, right? and i know a pipe can't cost that much to make...and a filter sure as hell isn't going to cost $250 - i wanna try out one from ebay for about $50...which seems WAYYY more reasonable. tell me if this is alright to go with. i mean, it's only $50...nothin to lose, right?

what else can i get that's simple and adds a decent amount of horsepower?

also...how many horses would i get out of a new catback exhaust?
