Default Best Bang For The $

Hi, I'm new here and in need of a little info. I am planning on buying an V6 Avenger in the near future and am looking for some performance upgrades. Basically, the car will be a daily driver. Although I would like it to be as gas efficient and practacal as possible, I'd like a little more oomphf. As far as the upgrades go, I was thinking a cold air intake. My question reguarding this is, would I be better off getting a aftermarket one such as the AEM V2 or fabbing up a cold air intake myself? Obviosuly fabbing one up would be a significant amount of work but, if done right would it be any better than the AEM V2? Also, I'd like to get it exhaling a little better as well. From the little research I have done thus far, a whole new performance system is going to be quite expensive. I was thinking of just a high flow high performance cat and muffler. Which would be good choices? Also, would some "performance" plug wires such as Accels/Mallorys/Taylors give much of a gain? My last and final question is this. Assuming the base horsepower is 160hp and torque is 170ft lbs and installed is a cold air intake, performance cat and muffler, and performance plug wires, how much of a gain would I be expecting? Thanks!

I'm not sure who that clown is, but I have some input.

You're right - you can save good money by just fabbing your own intake pipe. It won't add as much horsepower as a V2 intake, but it will give you gains. The choice is yours to determine if it's worth the extra bucks for the extra gains.

If you have a limited budget, I recommend doing the simple bolt-on stuff first. The plug wires do make a difference, but not the type of difference that a new intake would make. Intake first, all the way. Exhaust would be next. Hi-flow muffler - not sure if you're referring to a performance exhaust, but a performance exhaust will give you noticeable performance and torque gains and make your venge sound a lot beefier. Only thing about the exhaust - it's not as easy to install as the intake, or some wires.

Good question on the horsepower gains from doing all that. If you use that V2 intake, and performance exhaust, and the wires, I would guess you could gain 20-25 horsepower total.

Actually any intake will work on our cars as long as the piping is big enough or small enough for the pipe opening

How long we talking pimpin?

I like how are cars are set up cuz the intake can go down right behind the front bumper without moving stuff around or drillin and cutting. I was wondering where is the best place to put it without the worry of sucking up water from driving in the rain. Dis dude told me to just buy a hood scoop and filter and put the filter on the intake. YEAAAAAH[8D] This is the kid with the civic that couldn't get past 3'G RPMS, turbo with only a wastegate.

Thanks for the input guys. I've kind of decided that the V2 is a little out of my price range and thus will probably end up fabbing one up. Is there someplace that sells "intake" tubing? Could I just use exhaust tubing or should it be a hard plastic like the stock ones are? What should I use for the filter, a K&N or is there something better? Also, a whole performance exhaust system is also a little out of my price range. Does someone sell a bolt on performance muffler and cat, or will I have to use universal ones and kind of fab up bits and pieces to make them work with the stock components? Sorry for all the questions but I know nothing about modding newer vechicles. Thanks for all the help and info [sm=icon_cheers.gif] !

That's really up to you. You can use exhaust piping, but it's kind of a heavy gauge metal IMO. It's less expensive if you can DIY the piping. As for the filter, K&N is the most universal filter there is. It's used by turbo and N/T guys worldwide. Quality is important when concerning the filter. Whatever filter you get, make sure you can use a K&N recharging kit on it, in other words, make sure the filter is reusable after cleaning or you will have to buy a new one each time you have a dirty filter.
I just used a drop in K&N filter (with the stock box), after I got tired of the hot air being sucked into the motor and causing a CEL to stay on. You can also replace the plastic piping with aluminum and cut the intake silencer (the part the goes into the driver's side fender).
I don't understand why everyone goes to the RAM intake and suck up heated air or go to a CAI and possibly take a chance on hydrolocking the motor when a drop in filter and cut silencer will work great. Think about it, you leave the heat of the engine bay out of the intake charge because the stock box will keep out more than 50% of the heat and you still get the sound because the silencer is cut away. That's just me though and worked fine for me.

I wish I had the stock airbox for the Eclipse because I would have done the same thing, but since I don't I've had to make a partition to help keep the hot air out.
