Default Tranny Question

I just bought my 1996 Dakota Sport. They tranny went out so I need to replace it. The factory tranny is the 44RE, my question is will other Dakota tranny's work or I need the 44RE?

Thanks
Pappy

44RE and 42RE fit right in; but I'd stick with the 44RE.

46RE is supposed to fit; !I! always thought the 46RE was a bit longer, but I've been told not.

You can also upgrade to a manual transmission if you wish; 5 speed conversions are out there, and you can even convert to a 6 or higher speed manual.

Any 1996 or newer with a 3.9, 5.2, or 5.9 in it, and an automatic.

The 46RE would be behind the 5.9; the 42RE or a 44RE behind the 3.9; and no telling which behind a 5.2 (it seems to have come either way depending on the options.)

The torque converter for a 5.9 may be externally balanced; so do pay attention to that.

Balance weights moved to the flexplate in 96.

Is the tranny code marked on the tranny and if so where are they located?
