how much fluid?
alright i have an 87 dodge dakota 4x4... how many quarts of tranny fluid does it take if i do a complete flush? im talkin unhook the cooler hose and flush it. also how much does each differential take?
Transmission and transmission cooler flush? I can't find anything in the book on capacities, but when I replaced my engine, I drained the torque converter and transmission....those alone took over 6 quarts.
Tranny fluid - a dry fill takes about 11 quarts. When I flushed the transmission in my '96, I used about 15 quarts. Just run it through until the fluid looks clean, and than a few extra seconds. (Keep in mind, these transmissions don't move the fluid in Park, so a helper is very nice).
Make sure you check your fluid level very good after your done.
Differential varies on which one you have, about 1.5 quarts for the 7-1/4, about 2.25 quarts for the 8-1/4.
Transfer case, probably around 1.25 quarts.
Typically, just fill the transfer case and differentials until the fluid starts pouring out the fill hole.

There is about 3-5 quarts in the pan. Most fluid is kept in the torque convertor.
There is some fact to the "if your transmission hasn't been regularly serviced before, don't start now," but it seems to be a little hit or miss.
