Can I put a v8 Throttle body on my 3.9 mag?

 

I want to race my brothers 4.3 vortec in a 90 model sonoma, he says its fast, and im sure it is, I have intake and exhaust on my truck, but I have never raced a 4.3 though i do know they have a reputation of being pretty stout. He put a intake on it and a flowmaster, My brothers truck wont be in town for a couple of months. lol Ill be ready, any ideas of quick mods or do you think i should just run his truck?

 

The v8 throttle body will bolt right up but you want to be sure that it is the same year or atleast check that the throttle cable and kick down cable ends are the same. As for beating a 4.3... if it is the vortec good luck. lol. I have owned two, and just raced my friend with mine. He has a 95 2wd short cab short bed, I have a 95 2wd extended cab. I have a cold air set up and a v8 TB and a few other things... His is all stock and he walked me. lol I know my trucks not fast but it looks nice lol

 

Yea. I hear that the 4.3 vortecs are mean, but theres always something meaner, lol

 

So exactly how much power will the v8 TB give you? Does your MPG's stay the same or do they decrease?

 

I think my MPG got a little better and as for power gain its not too much but worth doing.A TB spacer does nothing but waist your money... but atleast you can see the 2 passages are a good deal bigger between the two TBs. I races another stock v6 dak same as mine(as close as you could get top mine lol) and I had about two car lengths on him from 0-45. Hope that helps.

 

I didn't think magnums had throttle bodies. 1992 was the first V8 magnum and it was a port f.i. Before that it was the LA 318engin I thought. And other than the Shelby they were only available in the 91's.

 

True, it is NOT TB injected but you still need some how to get air into your engine. There is no fuel lines running to the TB so it makes it a real easy swap.

 

SO I should take a 318 TB?

 

I would say so... You will see a difference. I got a different style intake setup from a Jeep GC with a 318 and used the piece that goes over the TB and made a cold air style set up also. It really makes it breath a lot better.
