Dual Exhaust or cat back on dakota?
I currently own a 96 dodge dakota with a 5.2l 318. I currently have a set of flowtech smog headers on to keep the emission because I am in a state that has inspection and does and visual check of the emissions doesn't check exhaust levels. So my question is, is it possible to put a dual exhaust system on and keep the emissions with out getting pipes specially bent or just go with a cat back system. Just y-pipe with headers seems abit odd to me but any thoughts would be great. Thanks
If you go duals, hp gains vary depending on where the diameter changes. On my '95 Dak, I've got it opening up to 3" right after the y into a 3" HiFlo Cat, 3" down to muffler, and dual 2.5" out back. It sounds good, barely noticeable increase to me, but friends of mine who've driven with me have noticed an increase in pickup.
I would say catback since you dont want to get pipes specially bent. There is not a true dual exhast direct bolt in kit. If you realy want to you can gutt out the cat. Some say to weld in a pipe inside while others say to just gutt it and leave it. That is what I did. And there are lots of differnt perpective of it if helps or not. Since they wont test the emssion gases it will pass the visual inspection. For me I do have the gas emission checked and it passes. Of course it is illigal.
Ive been wondering where you went onebadkota. Welcome back!

hey OneBadKota is finally back! that 360 givin you trouble?lol j/k
As far as exhaust setup goes when your in a strict a state as mine its always a bad idea to gutt your cat but i still did it XD. I have 2 years till the next emission check ill just weld the cat back then.

Thats what I used. Great catback for the price, or the pipes at least. I used it when I was in a hurry to get the dak on the road, but plan on using the pipes if i ever get to going to true duals with glasspacks. The only problems I had were that the pipes wouldn't fit in any box that Fedex had, so they had to be cut. That wasn't an issue as I was going to weld them anyway. The other problem was that the Thrush muffler (based on flowmaster 40 series, and was about half the price) was about half inch too big on the in and outs.
The guy I talked to there seemed nice enough, and sale went without a hitch.
Lucky for me, no more emissions for obd1 and earlier vehicles here in wisconsin.
