Default Does replacing ECU require VIN burned into new one

Reading up on rebuilt ECU's, I understand that you have to bring the truck to a dealer and have the VIN burned into the replacement ECU, before it will even run.

Any trueth to that? Local Dodge dealer says so and wants $90 to do it.

If that's true, how do you do it to a used one from a different truck?

Like crazy said, on these you don't need to, but on the newer vehicles you do for emissions testing purposes, if they see a different vin come up on the computer than what's on the truck, they'll fail you for "tampering with emissions control systems"
