Default Am I worrying to much

Ok i've been testing my dak out lately and I noticed my oil gauge will fluctuate between rpm's I know pressure changes as engine speed increases but before the rebuild my oil pressure needle would go up and stay up no matter if I was at idle or not

So anybody else have any opinions? Im probley worrying over nothing but I Obsess over everything XD

Gonna check my oil pressure but lost my sender unit socket. :P

mine has been doing it since the 318 too, have not got around to checking mine with a gauge yet either. when mine is up too temp and idles for a while it will be right on the little line before low. so i figure that is still ok. i think my cheap advance auto parts sending unit is messed up though.

Ya mine does that to. Low at Idle but goes up just with a little more rpm.

you may want to get a mechanical guage that shows the exact PSI... I think the check engine light will come on if oil pressure goes below like 6 psi, but by then you could have already done damage.

ya been talkin to couple other guys at my work guy says his toyota 4x4 does same thing I guess it really depends on the car cause my work truck a banger ranger oil pressure goes up an stays up but here's the dummy guage part it can be as low as 6psi at high rpm and still be reading normal on the guage :O and thats when I decided to but a mech gauge on there guess thats not a bad idea for the dodge just to be safe.

Mechanical gauges are better and more reliable than electrical...just make sure all fittings are tight. But, to answer your question, oil pressure SHOULD fluctuate with rpm. You will notice that your pressure readings will generally be higher at idle when the engine is cold (thicker oil, higher warm up rpm, etc.), but once everything warms up, the pressure will dip back down. The slower engine speed, the lower the pressure...that's normal. A general rule of thumb is 10 lbs of pressure for every 1000 rpms.

...I dont know...I have never seen a dodge have less than 30psi at idle 800 to 1000rpm's unless there was a problem. On my 95 318 ram when my oil pressure started to dropp at idle hot, due to the over 200k miles I put another oil pump in it. No more droping oil pressure.
Oh and no you are not worrying to much.

i hve seen several like that, like previously said, the general rule of thumb is 10 psi for every 1000 rpm. just for a fun fact, in aviation it is ok to have as little as 4-5 psi at idle!!! and also as long as there is pressure there within the first 30-60 seconds of start up it is ok to run!!! just something to think about next time you fly on a gas engine air plane. and no, they are not built any tougher than automotive engines by any means. thought some of you would like to know
